I say NO to installing your old hard drive into the new system. It might void any warranty you have with the new computer and frankly a external USB drive is nice to have anyway. I got a Iomega 250 GB USB drive for under ~ $80 a while back. Plug in, copy files. Done.

Just curious, why would adding an older hard drive to a newer system possibly void any warranty? I am assuming that only non system and data files are stored on the HD. I bought two new kick butt HDs configured in Raid 1 for the system. I simply added the old (non system) HD and it works fine.

A word of caution. If your using any version of Vista, DO NOT use an older cpu, even on older kick butt one. You will put it on its knees. Use XP for all but the latest kick butt systems, and even then I wonder if XP wouldn't be a better bet.

It sounds like Ken's hard drive is a system drive. If he's not experienced with computer assembly, which I admit is nearly plug and play, he might hose something up installing his older HD. Just a thought. I would hate to fight Dell or GW if I accidently toast something due to me poking around with older hardware.

I also like the external drive cause it's portable between multiple computers. And if HD space is not at a premium why have an old second drive in the case turning electricity into noise and heat?
