yamaha blaster 350 build......

i recieved a free yamaha blaster back in march and have finally had some time to get started on the build.
the included but disassembled 200cc 2stroke was missing enough parts that i'm going to step it up a bit.

i've got a honda 350x engine (4 stroke) which will be going into this thing, we will be modifying the frame to fit the engine but nothing extreme.

today i stripped it down, took about 2 hours.....pretty basic machine.
the frame will be repainted but not sure what color yet, i 2 sets of plastic.....red or off-white, the seat is red/blue.
so i need some ideas for a color combo :D

some pics.....

as i got it....

been a few months so here's an update :)

i picked up the 350x engine for myself for x-mas, so now that things have settled down some we got something accomplished.
we need to make one more mount for the front of the engine and add a couple supports for where we cut the frame but it's in :)
we used square tubing as it was simpler to work with, but who cares....function not form :)
as with anything like this one thing affects another, the stock fuel tank is going to hit the cylinder head so i will be either "reshape" the bottom of the stock tank or will retro fit a different one....
i don't have the carb yet but that too will interfere with the tank.....
and the position of the shift lever may be too far forward, so that'll need addressed also........
plus side is we have the engine positioned where the exhaust will fit without modification.....
after the mounts are done i'm going to paint the frame....going with flat black

big thanks to christian (a quiet boom), we trade labor all the time, he worked on the mounts and i installed a remote start on his family-mobile :)

this thing is going to be stupid fun....we're going from a 200cc 2 stroke to a 350cc 4 stroke, so from 20hp to 40hp

some pics....a little blurry....

Nice project Bell ! maybe get the frame powdercoated ?

bell 01-06-2008 09:46 PM

i probably will after everything is dialed in....meaning once i beat the crap out of it for a couple months, once i know it's solid i'll make it look pretty :)

Looks like a fun project!

I would have thought a 200cc 2-stroke would trump or at least equal a 350cc 4-stroke.

I occasionally think about finding a classic 70's MX bike to restore. I need to learn to quit clicking on links that I know will give me "bad" ideas ;):D

Blasters are sized for teenagers - hope your not a big guy. A Banshee frame is more adult sized.

While you have it apart, I wonder if you could stretch it out a little?

bell 01-07-2008 07:16 AM

i'll be adding an extended swingarm later...probably +6" or +7", wider axle, and can also space out the front easily......i want to get it moving under it's own power first.
the 200cc blaster engine has nothing on the 350x 4 stroke, the powerband/gearing of the 350 will make this a very agile monster, the blaster and banshee share alot of the same parts, the wheelbase is about 6"-7" shorter than the banshee which the extended swingarm will take care of, personally i always liked the agility of the blaster chassis.....just needed more power :)

in all i think i'll have about $400 into the whole project :D

The extended swingarm should help, I always feel cramped when I sit on a blaster.

I play around with an '86 Suzuki Quadracer.

My neighbor growing up did swapped a 350x 3 wheeler motor into a 250ex quad. That thing would move for a 4 stroke.

You sure you can fit a GSXR750 motor in there?

I don't know how much you paid for that 350 motor but it might have been cheaper to get a used 200 and work it up a bit. With a big bore kit and a water cooled head i bet it would be a beast. I'm sure the 350 will be fun too though. I had a friend back in my riding days that took an old honda 250x quad and put a 650 4cycle motor out of a dirt bike into it. Talk about stupid fast on a small frame atv.

built used blaster engines are going for $400+, used 350x engines have been going for anywhere from 500+ and are always missing the compression release cable system, i got my 350 for $250 with everything complete but the carb from a friend :)

I miss my Bombardier DS650.... a lot. That was a monster...

I have a friend with one of those, and i'm terrified of the damn thing.

deanp 01-07-2008 05:13 PM

I'm 6'2" and better than 250#'s. Was a perfect fit. Huge torque (had after market CDI, exhaust, bigger carb, cams). There was nothing like it in the woods and sand pits, no one ever wanted to be behind me on the rocky northeast trails since instead of normal roost it would spit softball size rocks about chest high. GPS verified runs in a cornfield at 72mph at the top of 4th, I never found a spot with enough room to find the top of 5th....

Like I said, I miss that quad....

Dutchie 01-08-2008 09:12 AM

i wonder where this is going Bell you and Christian did some cool stuff allready ! my guess is that it will have a haybusa engine and a custom cnc job for the frame :D

bell 01-20-2008 09:41 PM

engine is officially mounted in chassis, christian did a great job with the mounts and reinforcing the front section of the frame where we had to cut it, have to pull the engine and sand/paint the frame (nothing special...sticking with silver) then i can start assembly and figure out the gas tank :)
pics to come...

Nice project.

I bought a new Honda 350X 3 wheeler when they first came out (1985? i think). For me that was a sorry engine. We would go to Glamis, Gorman and other local So Cal off road areas and the 350X could barely make it up many hills. I would get on my friends 250R and the hills were a breeze. The dunes were especially tough. A few months later I bought a Honda 250R 4 wheeler, sold the 350X and couldn't have been more happy. Riding was never the same.

I guess it depends on what you will be doing with the bike.

bell 01-21-2008 07:26 PM

mainly it's just for fun, trail riding and general goofing off with friends :)
going to weld on the oil cooler mounts tomorrow night, then fab the lines....and take some decent pics.
the fuel tank is going to take some creativity....i'll be heating and reshaping the stock plastic tank (after it's flushed of course) theres a chance it'll work, but i doubt it LOL
carb should be here by early next week, which too interferes with the tank :D
more to come.......

bell 01-27-2008 08:18 PM

made a little progress, pulled the engine back out, going to replace the exhaust studs, painted the frame a nice shiny silver (nothing special LOL)....
you can see the pieces christian welded in. i welded some tabs to mount the oil cooler, got it in a good position....but i weld for ****e with my little 110....
carb is here, i'm going to track down a rebuild kit tomorrow, get some oil lines, then start re-assembling...
some pics

bell 02-03-2008 01:51 PM

got some things accomplished......except pics with a good camera :D

the bike is a rolling chassis again, i had to re-route the front brake cables due to where the oil cooler had to go, but no big deal......
we still need to get the old exhaust studs off the engine for replacement, hopefully we'll get to that this week, once that's done i can wrap the exhaust tubing and can instal the engine.
the carb i got off ebay was going to be a bigger pia to get working than i thought so i bought an oem 350x carb/cable, so it should fire right up when i get that far :)
heading back out to the garage.....

i promise better pics soon.
