I did it!

The story goes like this…

My wife and do a lot of beach tent camping. We even love just going down for the night and as often as we do it, we don’t do it as much as we want due to having to pack the truck, set up the tent, pack in the morning before check out.; it gets to be a bit much for one nighters when you do it often. We wanted to make it easier but still keep it simple. Trailers and RVs were out, and nothing else really yelled FUN; until we decided to get a VW bus.

So we’ve wanted to buy a VW camper bus for a couple of years now. I knew right off the bat that I wanted a split window (-’67) and I started to research and look at the VW classifieds. About three months ago it became time to buy. I felt that I knew the market pretty good and knew that I wanted a bus that was solid cosmetically and structurally, mechanically I just wanted it to all be there. I didn’t want another project and after putting a lot more into 911s than they are worth knew that spending more upfront would save me a lot in the long run.

The bus I ended up buying was a 1964 that had just gone under a full bare metal restoration. The guy didn’t intend to go as far as he did but, to his great credit, once they started he knew he had to see it though and do it right. Unfortunately for him it was way more than he had planned and when it was done they couldn’t afford to keep her.

Anyway, I’m so excited. The bus get more looks and thumbs up than I’ve ever had in the 911s. I flew up to Oregon to look at her and drove her 1000 miles home that very day. What a blast it was to get to know her on that trip. Here are a couple pics by Mt Shasta, bugs on her nose and all. I hope you like her.

LOL! Awesome! Many fun days ahead of you!

You going to put a 993 engine in it? :p

very, very cool. I pondered buying a friend's '71 bus awhile back, and have flirted with the idea of some vintage of Westy over the past few years. She is beautiful...

That looks great! Nice find.

Holy nice...it's on my retirement list of (to do)...

I've always had a soft spot for those and don't know why, it isn't something I really see myself wanting. Maybe I spent too long watching Scooby Doo as a kid?

Awesome! Lets see the interior pics too!

I think you did the right thing getting one thats totally fixed up like that.

That's a beautiful VW. I've been casually looking for something along those lines, mostly Westfalias, which they sell at "Go Westy" for some decent $$..

Love it! Is the interior set up as a camper? From the factory?

Noah930 10-09-2007 05:03 PM

cool ride Ryan, I am potentially in the market, drop me a PM with what I should expect to pay please, I'd very much appreciate it.

Thanks guys! I really can't get over how beautiful she is. The interior is in great shape but she only has some of the camper interior. That is kind of cool because we can camp in her as is and decide if we want to add or change anything later. The camper stuff that is there is showing it's age, but that's easy stuff compared to body and paint work.

Very, very nice. I keep everything I need for camping in my Westy at all times so I can camp at the drop of a hat, without even going home first. Just get some groceries and go.

HardDrive 10-09-2007 07:35 PM

Wow, fantastic bus. Congrats!

mannrak 10-09-2007 07:46 PM

Congratulations!! That's a beautiful bus.... You're right, they are awesome for quick camping trips. We can decide to go camping and an hour later, we're on the road.

You're going to love it. My 911 spent most of the summer in the garage because we were out camping in the bus!

That's just way too cool. My parents bought a 1961 Bus new, I remember when people used to flash their lights when another one went by.
