350 TBI Timing
Has anyone ever messed with one? What I've gotten myself into is building a 350 motor up with a hotter cam. Why the owner didn't want to do more is beyond me, but it's his money, not mine. Anyway, from what I know the cam requires the timing to be 27 degrees BTDC, which I should be able to accomplish with a timing light after I get the motor to TDC.
My question is what to do with the timing advance on the distributor. Do I have to fudge with the ECU? I've read some on the subject, but haven't run across any information that really nuts everything down like Pelican does with a Porsche. It's a 3/4 ton 1988 4x4 Suburban TBI 350. Thanks |
I put a 350TBI into my 72 LandCruiser with a hotter cam, the ECU gets a reference signal from the distro, but that's about it. I had to reprogram the ECU to drop the VSS sensor, and I don't remember anything in the code about advance. TBI is very forgiving, and very simple, you can do most anything with it.

I had almost the same vehicle for a few years - an '88 GMC Sierrra 2500 (3/4 ton). If you want to do anything even semi-serious with respect to making power, get rid of the TBI and go with port injection. I never really did too much serious with the truck though - didn't really see the point. Even if you make 400+ h.p., it's still in a vehicle with terrible handling characteristics and that weighs twice as much as a sports car with the same power. Not my cup of tea.
