My old bicycle

Surfing the web, I found an old ad for the bike my dad bought me...back in my grade school years. At the time, I didn't have the heart to tell dad I really wanted a Schwinn Corvette. Man, this old Huffy was heavy...the kids on the Schwinns left me in the dust. But hey, if the batteries were fresh, I could sorta listen to the local radio station.

The nostalgia of it all...at the time, I thought I had the most "uncool" bike in town. Today? Well, I don't have a clue where it went after I quit using a bike for transportation.

That was a tube radio in the tank...the "headlight" took D cell batteries, IIRC...

Funny how parents do that...buying things for their taste, not the kid's taste.

I was on the trailing end of all my father's siblings and cousins having kids, which meant I got some pretty well-worn hand-me-downs.

My first bike was a Flintstones Bike. No training wheels, no brakes. I learned to ride it by going to the top of the hill and then pushing off towards the bottom. The first time I got going well, I went all the way to the bottom of the hill and off of the retaining wall at the end of our front yard. I hated that bike, and was the happiest kid in the WORLD when I got a freestyle bike with pegs on the front and back, and a platform. I learned to surf really fast.

My first bike was a Corvette!

Photo (not my personal bike however) Mine was black.

Yes, I was a kid in 1958.

Wow, hadn't thought about that bike in years. It had 3 speeds. Not like new types with multiple sprockets and de-railers. It had an internal setup in the rear hub (almost like a differential?) Wierd setup.

Note $80 price tag! My mother put down $10 and they financed it (I paid with my paper route, weekly).

That's the one! It was "the" bike for my grade school set....of course, many quickly stripped the fenders and other non essentials. My clunky old Huffy didn't have a prayer of keeping up. I don't think Lance Armstrong could have kept up with the average Corvette rider if he'd been forced to ride a Huffy...

Still sitting in a Turkish customs bonded warehouse. Papers had to be submitted back to the USA and recertified because some bozo listed the car's weight as 4,000Kg's. Evren is hoping, "any day now"...but of course, he's been hoping that for nearly 7 weeks...

True words and a worthy thread topic in it self. A behaviour that digs deep into the neurotic phases of parenthood.

I had one of those bikes that was made to look like a dirtbike. Plastic gas tank, big seat, front & rear shocks. It was rediculously heavy. I can't find pictures of those things anywhere... what were they called?

I bet there is a guy in Turkey that would take it off your hands and pay for shipping!

RadioBike! That is awesome. I'd never heard of it before. I had a Huffy bike, but nothing special. My first bike was nothing special either. Another big brother hand-me-down. I think the only thing I got new before I was 12 was underwear.

Schwinn Tornado. The only thing missing is the cards in the spokes... and later, I had the Vroom.

I'm loving this one...look at those bikes...How'd we ever survive? No reflectors, no mandatory helmets...and think about it, only ridden by kids. No adult asses in spandex...

The bike was transportation in those days. Evereywhere in town, ballfields, the swimming pool, and beyond...to the river for fishing, etc.

Pretty close to what happened with a P-car...which will never be in the wrong hands here in the USA...

(edit) So Mike, any memories of your favorite bike as a kid?
