Economics Help
I have an assignment for Econ 201 in which i have to come up with an economic conundrum and then solve it. This is based on Robert Frank's the economic naturalist and steven levitt's Freakanomics. One example was the question of why pop and water are usually sold in round bottles at a convenience store or gas station but milk came in the square cartons. The answer was that the pop and water could be stored anywhere but milk had to be kept refrigerated so they wanted to maximize the amount that could be stored in the fridge so there would be less wasted space and therefore less wasted money.
I am having trouble coming up with a conundrum of my own. Any ideas? (and for anyone who has read either of the two books above, we are not allowed to use anything from them)

It would make sense that the best quality fruit is available to buy at a store that is closest to where it is grown. But, in general, the opposite is true. Why?

Hot dogs vs. hot dog buns
Windshield wiper fluid comes in 1 gal. containers and windshield wiper reservoirs always seem to hold about 7/8 gal regardless of where the car is made

Here's a really good one, R12-R134a. Why did US DOT tell automakers R12 refrigerant could no longer be put in newly manufactured cars. 1994 was the cut off date, I think. Big economic impact, environment not so much. Huge scam, maybe the biggest in the history of the automobile industry.

Find a solution to packaging...those foam "popcorn" spores are non-biodegradable and are landfill nightmares. But they are cheap.
Make your packaging affordable and enviro friendly. Do it. ![]()
