Which Vanguard IRA?

The search function isn't working right for me at the moment (I'm at work writting TPS reports). Do any of you have a Vanguard IRA? I'm planning to roll some old 401k's into a traditional IRA with Vanguard, but I'm not sure which fund to go with.

I'm 34 and wouldn't mind going on the risky side. I'm not investment savvy, just looking to put money in, add to it and watch it grow. They have a fund called a Target 2035 that I'm interested in, any comments on it?

-Thanks in advance...

I was a finance major in college. I wanted to learn how to make money.

What I learned instead was that those that try the hardest to make money (amateurs and professional fund managers alike) tend to do the worst in the long term.

Throwing darts at a page of the WSJ tends to outperform any "managed" investments (amateur or professional alike) over the long term (5+ years).

And the good old DJIA tends to outperform the dart board over the long term.

Loads/fees will eat almost any returns on any fund.

My advice (which I am not licensed to sell, so I'm giving it for free): get into a no-load index fund.

FWIW, check out DFA - sort of a hybrid between an index and managed fund.

From the "Chicago School" of investment . . .

http://www.dfaus.com/ - Informative site, IMHO.

Access to these funds will typically be through a "no-fee" CFA, which are listed on the DFA site.

Best,

Kurt

I'm in the Vanguard S&P 500 mutual fund which has always done quite well. I think several people on here have suggested that the S&P 500 tends to do better than the "specialty" funds recommended by the pros.

Your not asking for IRA recommendations, you asking about their mutual funds, yes?

I have a Vanguard IRA, but mine is in one stock at the moment, WFMI.

I'm talking about a traditional IRA. I have a couple of old 401k's that I want to roll over and consolodate. You can do either an all-in-one type fund or open a brokerage account. Since I'm not savvy, I'll probably go with an all-in-one type account. Then there's the "Target" or "LifeStrategy" funds... if I go with the Target, I'm looking at a 2035 Fund. If I go LifeStrategy then there's another host of funds... Opening a brokerage account will be $30/year, which is nothing but... just don't know what to do.

Get thyself to Amazon..buy and read "The little book of common sense investing" It is written by John C. Bogle, the founder of Vanguard.

The target funds by vanguard are good funds...but then, so is their total stock market index fund, which MAY fit your needs better.

Buy the book..buy the book...buy the book. Oh...buy the book! We have been giving it to friends who are "not investment savvy" like you. Read this book, and you'll be more savvy. It is written by one of the "Gods" of the investment world.

Open a Schwab account and put your funds in a number of different mutual funds, not just one. Try and diversify, and not get three or four funds that have the same stuff in them. No point in having four funds that have Catepillar in their top ten percent. They have no load-no fee funds.
