Why isn't the national news covering this?!!??!!

Yesterday afternoon on my way home about a quarter mile from my house in Alamo, California police had traffic stopped. I counted 18 police cars and a police helicopter. Officers ran down the street, guns drawn, into neighbors yards and leaping over fences. There were more police cars parked on the freeway in case the suspects tried to run for the highway.

Alamo is a pretty quiet little suburb so I figured it would be low on list of Al Quaida terror cell sites. Well, it turns out that it wasn't anything quite so dramatic. Apparently 4 unarmed men burglarized a Longs drug store, stealing liquor and crashed their car during the "get away". Apparently this was a HUGE threat to the safety of my community.

By the way, DO NOT EVEN THINK about jaywalking in my town, buster!

Not Salacious Enough

Your little event doesn't rate because Bush wasn't involved or Hillary wasn't caught clam smacking.

Yeah, but they got to break out all that cool cop stuff that's been collecting dust back in the precinct store room. No doubt there are 8x10 color glossies with a paragraph on the back of each one, splainin' what each one was to be used as evindence against them...or so the song goes.

We don't even have a Dunkin' Donuts. They have to spend all day sitting in Starbucks sippin' lattes and nibbling on scones.

Unless there's footage for the news, it didn't happen.

The news sucks, a guy gets hit by a car and they take ground level shots of traffic passing and the curb just to have something to talk over. That's a 15 sec story...no need to send out the reporters and satellite trucks.

The news media was concerned about the tiger killings and Pats / Giants game tonight, no time for small town stuff. Not a big deal unless someone is killed, preferably multiple deaths (of course I'm being sarcastic)

Very insensitive world we live in today!!

My dad lives about 2 blocks away from me. He was an Oakland cop for 25 years. He laughed when he heard that all the fuss was for a burglary. He said, "Hell, in Oakland we wouldn't get more than three patrol cars responding to a homicide."

I wonder if the cops in Alamo keep a single bullet in their shirt pocket like Barney Fife? I hope so...

The initial police response with the high risk tac team, snipers, and copters came about because of a very understandable mixup over the location of the burglary. The police got a little excited taking the call and mistook "Alamo, California" for "Los Alamos, New Mexico". Naturally they threw all their resources at it.

The higher ups were alerted and got involved, quickly escelating the response to prove their importance. They were shrewd enough to suspect there might be a problem with the report of this possible international incident, so they didn't alert the national media right away. However, they didn't want to run the risk to their careers of being called soft on terrorism, or being open to charges that they brought less than their entire resources to bear on a credible threat on the nations's top nuclear facility, so they brought in the copter as the icing on the cake.

After the sleeper cell was captured, New Mexico was located on a state higway map, the evidence siezed, and a fifth of it consumed, reality returned. The local news declined to report on the gang that couldn't drive straight and the story angle "Cops in copters outnumber crashing criminals twenty to one" didn't seem like a winner, so they went of looking for an orphaned panda to photograph.
