Possibly selling a unique car, need some ideas on where to market...

The wifey's business is expanding and we need all of the working capital we can get our grubs on, and the time has possibly come to sell the blond...:(

This is not exactly your plain old factory 914/6. It started out a bit on the sorry side, so no concourse winner here. But, I have restored it and done a few of what I consider the "right" upgrades. Nothing changes the look of the car, so it is a sleeper, even for a 6. I built this up for me.

Original Engine (matching numbers), upgraded to a 2.7 with RS Spec pistons and cylinders(2.4 crank and rods), piston squirters, case savers, heads setup for maximum flow, with carbs matched to the engine. Engine build done by a master builder in San Diego.

Transmission: Again, on the original case with matching serial numbers, transmission rebuilt into a sideshift. All dog teeth, sliders and synch bands have been replaced. Still has the original gears and gearing.

Interior: Passenger seat converted to '72 movable. Interior redone in black leather with cloth seat insets. It looks original, but should hold up better than the vinyl. I still have all of the original parts, even the dog bone. There is the early center cubby.

Doors: I changed out the doors to the 1973 models so that they have both the stronger frames and have the upgraded window mechanism.

Wheels: I have installed 16x6 so that I can purchase decent tires. Tires were chosen so that the the speedo reads correctly. I have the stock 14x5.5s.

Speedo upgraded to 150 mph model.

My intention was to make the car the best it could be, yet still look original.

Any idea where would be the place to advertise something like this?

I've seen two or three 914-6's sell over @ 914World classifieds in the last few weeks. Not sure if they received top dollar, but they all did sell.

I advertised my car in Hemmings.

Wow, that 1971 914/6 went for $25K on Evil Bay!

I think eBay is currently the place to be for exposure for a car like that. You'll probably have to deal with quite a few tire-kickers and nuts, though. The downside of wide exposure.

Stick it in Ebay with you phone number or a number you don't mind being used. Ebay has made it tough to get around the specifics by contacting sellers through email, but a phone number still works. I have a friend that uses this way all the time. Where else can you advertise nationwide and reach millions for a few bucks.

Why not post as couple pictures right here. A Pelicanhead may jump on it.

Pelican, PCA, collectorcartrader.com, Hemmings, Ebay. Ebay probably has the most BS, but the most exposure too.

Sounds like a very nice 914. Any teaser pics? I'll be the first time wasting tire kicker.:D

I'd post pictures, but something between the new forum software and my computer no longer allows pictures to upload.

just tried again

onewhippedpuppy 10-30-2007 04:15 AM

If you want to sell it, just go ahead and upload the pics to photobucket. It's by far the easiest way to post pictures, especially if you'll be putting them on multiple sites. This is coming from a guy that has had something like 8 cars in the last couple of years, I know these things.:D

If you do FleaBay go to AOL and get a free Voice Mail Box.

It's a toss away phone number perfect for stuff like this.

red-beard 10-30-2007 04:36 AM

Photobucket worked

mikester 10-30-2007 05:32 AM

Tough Choice man....

onewhippedpuppy 10-30-2007 05:37 AM

Very nice. That must be quite the sacrifice.

Tobra 10-30-2007 10:53 AM

Don't do it, take out a loan, do anything else. You will NEVER get enough out of it to make it worth the sacrifice. You may even resent the wife a bit down the road if you do sell it.

If you must, at least give the Club or the World a shot at it so it goes to a nice home.

Hey, I thought you were in the Bayou City, what is with the Cali plates?

RickM 10-30-2007 10:57 AM

I hate to say this but Ebay may be your best bet. I'm selling my 380 SL and Ebay is the only venue that has generated interest (in the shortest amount of time). I may have to run it once or twice but it'll get sold.

RickM 10-30-2007 10:58 AM

Shameless plug :D
