Pelican Car for Sale Ads Like This

Piss me off. He says he is a motivated seller, but only wants people to bid on the car. ******* take it to ebay then. I actually am interested in the car, but I am not going to play games. Just tell us how much you want for it.

1964 356c For Sale! Serious Buyers Only!

Too bad we can't post on that thread. I'd tell him he's on the wrong site and meant to put it on eBay.

I've always wondered how realistic these "selling for a friend" as really are.

I seem to recall a similar selling tactic used here in the past that ended being a big cluster-fcuk. A couple long time members at each others throats. Not sure if they worked things out.

This is the sellers first post. Anyone know him?

The first thing I look at in the for sale section is post count. 1 post = turn and run.

it's the same as testing the waters on eBay to get a sense of value, without all that trouble and expense of actually creating an eBay ad.

If there is no selling price the ad should be moved to Marketplace Discussion

would it be inappropriate to offer a half eaten ham sandwich?

The only thing I like more than these ads are the ones that say " I would like to get between 20,000 and 25,000" Uhh ya, I think Ill offer 25k knowing that you will take 20k LOL.

If anyone is TRUELY interested, and would like a PPI let me know.
The car is located about 2 hours from my shop, so it wouldn't be too tough to go take a look at it.

And no, I do not know the person listing the car!

Yup, classic way to deflect liability or responsibility when things go wrong.

I've always felt the same about the 'ranged" pricing.

Selling houses in NY and after 1st broker could not sell went with Prudential who do the ranged pricing thing.

Here is their logic, say you are looking for $525,000 for your house you list it at $550,000 to give you negotiating room. Everyone knows you'll likely take less than $550 anyway.

There buyers out there that have set a limit at $499 or $500. They will never come look at your house.

By pricing it in a range of $495 to $540 you pick up the buyers that had $500 as a limit.

They claim it generates the "ebay" bidding effect on potential buyers.

I was skeptical until the new broker sold my house in 3 weeks in this market.

My prior "fixed" price was outside of the buyers range, once we did the ranged pricing he came to look.

He passed on a cheaper house in his original range and we negotiated a price for my house that was $25k above the minimum in my listed range.

So I have to say it worked.

The thing is, I am interested and actually have the money to buy it. But I sure am not going to bid against myself to get it. Or even worse, make an offer and then the guy holds it to see if he gets a better offer. Just tell me how much you want for the damn thing!

No price, no details, and "serious buyers only." In my mind if you can't take the time to record the details and tell me what you're asking then you are not a serious seller.

How do I know if I'm serious unless you tell me about the car???

It's common for flippers to take a car that's for sale locally but not their own, without the owner's knowlege, and try to pimp it to a broader audience. If they can get a sucker who will pay more than what it's being sold for locally, they buy the car and flip it to the mark. If the car gets sold out from under them, they have the convenient excuse that their 'friend' backed out.

At first I though how bad could it be... but then I looked at the ad

"I am selling for a friend. I am a motivated seller. "

"I will also post the highest offer at random intervals. So start sending me offers. "

Huh? WTF?

Nice looking car though.
