I wait for this day all year
So today I'm out at the market and lo and behold, I spy the one thing i have waited for all year. The one thing that makes me truly believe that there is a God.
Gentlemen. The wait is over. NOG is back. Thats right. Egg Nog is back on the shelves at my local market. Cheesey happy |

Two kinds of people in this world.
Those that take it with rum. And those that take it with bourbon.. |
Start your daily regimen of 81mg aspirin now, you don't want to clog your vessels before the holidays.

I used to work for a dairy that sold egg nog seasonally.
My position is this: Anyone who would ruin good alcohol by putting it in egg nog deserves to be taken out, shot and pi$$ed upon. On the other hand, if you are trying to improve the flavor of cheap booze...carry on. Les |
I'm only slightly embarrassed to post this...http://forums.pelicanparts.com/suppo...leys/blush.gif
...but it has become a holiday tradition that I brew a large batch of homemade eggnog, of which the entire extended family comes over and samples. I actually use a recipe of Martha Stewarts (the lush...I had to cut the alcohol in half, or we would all be *****faced after two glasses!). It took me a few years to figure it out, but 'oh my god' I've got it down now, and it is one of the in-laws favorite elements of the holidays! |
anyone know where I can find some Verpoorten Eierlikoer?

I like mine with both! Probably won't go near it this year, I'm still trying to burn off blubber that I put on last year during the holidays... that stuff has got to be... what... like 2000 calories a glass! |

I thought you were going to say it's the day the Jujubees go on markdown.

Ah, a man after my own heart. I live for my nog this time of year. I'll take my booze on the side, enjoying both in their pure, unfettered, undiluted glory. Big ol' frozen stein of nog in one hand, a glass of neat Scotch in the other...

You gotta love this board-where else can you go from fresh egg nog recipes to still unsettled WWII issues over the A-bomb in 2 minutes? I'll take the egg nog! bourbon or rum is fine..

just picked up a quart at the market. thanks for the reminder!
My mom's husband used to make an awesome homemade egg nog, but now he has to go AA. small sacrifice for my mom. |

IIRC
Whip up a bunch of eggs (in blender... or separate and whip if you want to go high class) about one egg per eight or ten ounce serving. Add milk and or cream. Add a $hitload of sugar... about a eighth to a quarter cup per egg or serving. Add real vanilla extract, just a little to start... remember you can alway add more. If you like cinnamon and/or nutmeg to taste. Sorry I am not exact on the measurements... I would throw two eggs in a blender, fill it half way with milk, toss in a handful of sugar and a dash of vanilla, and a pinch of salt. Presto! eggnog! |
excellent topic. I love egg nog too...very cold, with cinnamon and nutmeg sprinkled on top.
|
Just did a quick websearch and I remembered right.
Eggs, milk and/or cream, sugar. Season with vanilla and/or cinnamon, nutmeg. That is the basic recipe... you can remove egg whites and go heavey or exclusivly with cream depending how rich you wan to make it. And of course add booze to taste. I used to make it as a teenager (without the booze)... I always though it funny that so many people think it is a big mysterious recipe. Party on boys! |
You bet...first off, you can find an imposter recipe all over the internet, but each one is different than the one my wife gave me straight our of Martha Stewart Living magazine...and that's the one that is tried and true, which is as below.
Martha Stewart's Eggnog 12 egg yokes 2 cups superfine sugar 1 vanilla bean (split half lengthwise w/ seeds removed/reserved 1 quart whole milk 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 1/2 cups bourbon 1/2 cup dark rum 1 pint heavy cream 1 freshly grated nutmeg 1. In medium saucepan, heat milk, vanilla bean and seeds. Bring to gentle boil. Remove from heat, cover, and steep for 30 minutes. 2. Combine egg yolks, 1 & 1/2 cups of sugar, and salt, into bowl of electric mixer. Beat at medium high until thick and pale yellow; 3 - 5 minutes. 3. Remove vanilla bean, and return milk to simmer. Add half the warm milk to egg mixture; whisk on low until blended. Pour egg mixture into remaining warm milk. Cook over low heat, stirring constantly, until mixture coats back of spoon; about 7-10 minutes. Remove from heat. Pass mixture through fine sieve into a large bowl. Chill completely in fridge. 4. Add bourbon and rum to chilled mixture...refrigerate. Whip cream and remaining 1/2 cup sugar until stiff. Gently fold into egg/milk mixture. Transfer in punchbowl. Sprinkle grated nutmeg on top...serve. PS: The amounts of alcohol that are listed struck me as too much the first time I made it...I subsequently reduced it to a cup of bourbon and 1/4 cup of rum...still pretty potent when chilled.:) Second PS: Careful when cooking egg mixture with milk for that 7-10 minutes...it's real easy to end up with scrambled eggs. (Can't tell you how many trips to the store I made one year for more eggs...really put a damper on the holiday mood  ,at least until the bourbon kicked in) |
Thanks, I appreciate you sharing this!

I am reliably informed that the only substance on this earth that has more calories by volume than eggnog is sperm.
So don't be too hard on the missus if she puts on a few pounds over Xmas. |
I'll stick with beer and wine, thanks.

All the Christmas traditions are good!
Two years ago, when my father in law was still alive he bought 151 instead of the regular rum? I know it'll torch, but does anyone else do this? BTW I like a rum soaked piece of fruit cake with my rum soaked nog. Anyone know of a good recipee? I've tried several and still I'm not happy. I do think Myers extra dark rum poured daily over the cake covered in cheese cloth then put into an air tight container is essential for 2 to 3 months. Christmas eve Jagermeister (From the freezer) shots before the evening service is a nice tradition too. Any schnapps traditions out there? |
Semen has nowhere near as many calories as nog. This was told to me as I was licking nog off the breasts of a friend.
|
Thanks for the recipe!
My tradition is sipping Irish Mist from these awesome goblets we have with my Dad in front of the fire place. The best! |
