I think the Haynes or Bentley (or others)will be fine. Been putting off a clutch job for way too long...

I've got one that I no longer need. It's a Bentley for the 1993 through 1996 Jetta, Golf, GTI, Cabrio.

my email address is Airboston@comcast.net

I remember you were talking about this earlier in the year.

Buy that Bentley from David! The Chilton & Haynes aren't great.

I've done clutches in A2 & A3 jettas... not too bad. You'll have to support the engine, as the front engine mount comes out too.

You have to pop the axles too, so it's a good time to change the CV boots and replace any front-end bushings & joints... which are notoriously weak on A3s anyway.

One thing the Haynes didn't describe: when you unbolt the tranny from the engine, it needs to be rotated counter clockwise a few degrees before pulling it away from the engine. Otherwise, the axle flanges will get caught up on the shifter fork and beat the piss out of it. Ask me how I know.

Also, make sure you change the clutch pushrod bushing & seal. Sometimes comes with a clutch kit, sometimes doesn't.

Jake, I knew you'd be help here. I've been nursing it along, but it's getting harder to do. I haven't been able to have it off the road for any amount of time. But now my brother-in-law has offered the use of his Audi while I get this done.

I've done it a couple times, and it's always been a last-minute rushed thing.

If I have to do it again, I would:

-Replace any CV boots that were older than a year or so

-Have a look beforehand to see if I need struts, ball joints, bushings

-The axles are bolted to the flanges using 8mm triple square bolts... (they look like Torx but they aren't) have a couple spare ones, because they get stripped easily. Clean those bolts out well before trying to loosen them... tap the socket in with a hammer to make sure they're well seated.

Once the socket starts to look like this, it'll strip the bolts and then it's really no fun. I usuallt trim it back with an angle grinder at least once before moving on to a new one.

Yup, I'll get it out in the morning. Good luck with the clutch. The only thing I attemped on my GTI was the struts and springs.
