What I want in an iPhone.
1) Bigger hard drive.
2) 3G network. 3) Delete multiple emails. 4) Keyboard that goes into landscape mode for texting. Any chance I'll see any or all of these features soon? |
1 and 2 are must haves before I buy one...however, once those are provided I will likely make the migration. It needs to be 16gb for me. My contract with AT&T is up in April and I would like to get in new phone before next July. Hopefully they come out the the Gen2 iPhone before then with those features.

16GB? On a CELL phone? Why, I remember when a 16GB disk drive in a computer was BALLER STATUS. Like, you had some serious $$$$$.
My how the times change.... Seriously, what do you do with 16GB on a cell phone? I have no intention of switching to an iPhone...I don't think it's nearly as good as it's hyped to be. |

1) iPod Touch has a 16GB flash drive (no disc) so at least a 16GB iPhone will be out very soon IMO; 2) Rumors say the overseas market may see a 3G radio as soon as early '08; IIRC, a US 3G model release is a function of ATT's domestic HSDPA coverage which is limited to a dozen or so markets now, but expanding. Seems like 16GB and G3/HSDPA would come together in iPhone 2.0, IMHO. 3) This can already be done fairly easily - just hit "edit" when viewing email list and one touch to delete each email. Maybe you mean a way to select a long list of emails then delete in one touch? 4) This will probably be in the next firmware update, IMHO. Landscape mode for texting input is a heavily requested feature, and this should be a relatively simple bit of software. Also, early next year Apple is releasing a SDK (software development kit) for 3rd party native iPhone apps - this is when we will see an explosion of *edit: "sanctioned" :)* native software; it remains to be seen how Apple will allow this native, 3rd party stuff to be distributed. FWIW. Best, Kurt |

My 8GB iPhone is almost full and more space would be nice. I have about 1/2 of my total music library on it, lotsa pics (mainly my daughter) and a couple of Podcasts from the Stanford Physics Dept. I have been using the iPhone for a few months, and IMHO it exceeds my expectations in about every category. For everything except very data intensive web pages, Edge network web, texting and email is surprisingly fast in my area (SoCal) - YMMV. It's really a micro-computer that has a phone included - the phone part is very good and gets excellent reviews across the board. Plus new features in every firmware update. FWIW. Best, Kurt |
I want search function for contacts.
I want to film video. I want Landscape texting. I want copy/paste function. More to follow... |
You can already get contact searching if you jailbreak your iPhone.
1) On iPhone goto http://www.jailbreakme.com 2) Install AppSnap 3) After AppSnap installed, install the following software: BSD Subsystems, Community Sources and Search app. This works on 1.1.1 firmware ***edit - 1.1.2 just released tonight, 11/08!*** - the latest. Just have to be careful before updating to the next firmware version! Or just wait a few months for official updates or sanctioned native apps. The rest of your requests are relatively easy software updates - I've already seen a native video recording app, but not offered for download yet. Also expect a way to use the iPhone as a disk as well, like the iPod has been able to do for a while. Best, Kurt |

I plan on replacing both my current RAZR and my 20gb iPod with an iPhone. My iPod is overflowing right now and I have 35gb of music on my computer, not to mention the video potential of the iPhone. I would like to be able to keep a fair amount of music on an iPhone rather than still retaining both devices. For those of you that already have them, are there car adapters for the iPhone (iTrip, non-aux cable)? Anybody used one? |

These is a great round robin over at phonedifferent.com crackberry.com treocentral.com and wmexperts.com where each addict has to use each of the other phones for a week, as a primary device and they are NOT allowed to use their regular device. Interesting comments. And yes, not one person has been swayed away from their original device, so far. It seems that some of my issues with the iPhone will be addressed with the opening of third party applications next year. I expect the issues with it not doing corporate applications are going to be addressed. It is already somewhat addressed with the phone hacks. I actually don't care if the iPhone has 4GB, 8GB or 20GB. It needs some sort of memory card slot. It is a lot easier to store common content (different movies, etc) on some sort of removable media, than deleting and changing it. The same should be said for the battery. For a phone, you should be able to carry a spare in situations where you can't recharge. For me, the touch keyboard might kill the deal. For the Treo and Crackberry guys, the touchscreen makes texting, especially one handed, tough. The phone should be 3G. There has been a great debate in the Treo community about 3G and whether wifi is necessary if 3G is available. I think it needs both, but the iPhone will be a punk without 3G. The 2 final things are not technical. Phones should be available unlocked. I have T-mobile for a reason. The dataplan is $30/month unlimited. The same plan on AT&T is $99. When out the country, T-Mobile is $10.00 per MB, AT&T is $20-30 per MB. International roaming: Per minute T-Mobile is $.99 in Europe, and $1.99 in Romania. Per minute, AT&T is $1.49 in Europe and $3.49 in Romania. I can't live with that. And...a cell phone should not cost $400, especially not when locked to a carrier. This is FRIGGEN Nuts. I can see $400 as an unlocked phone, but not as a locked phone. |

Me? I'm a PDA guy. I needed my PDA merged with a phone, and that is the Treo. |
For 3G support you need to watch the Qualcomm/Broadcom patent infringement case.
It's why the iPhone did not ship with it to begin with. Have not been following that closely but as I understand it Qualcomm supplies most of the 3G chips. When the suit hit QC chips were embargoed from import. Had Apple used them they'd be sitting on a couple of million phones that can't be landed in the US. Devices that were already in country were grandfathered. |
I remember being given crap for buying a laptop with a 10MB harddisk drive...instead of just dual 720K floppies.
I bought a Zenith 181 laptop around that time. I went with the dual 720's. Couldn't fathom needing a 20MB hard drive of the Zenith 183 (what would you do with all that memory?!?). Couldn't afford it either (it was about 40% more, if I recall). Even with a discount from UCSD, it was the better part of $2,000. Imagine today trying to live with 720k! So much for my foresight! LOL! |
I would like all those things in an iPhone too. Probably by 2009 they'll all be there.
I have an old 2nd Gen iPod 20GB with 16 or 17 gigs of music on it, a 1st Gen iPod shuffle for exercise, and an iPhone. While about 32GB would be great (all my music plus movies), I'm surprised by the usefulness of the 8GB on the iPhone. I was on long flights to London and Hawaii with my wife, and we were able to watch ripped movies (Office Space, Idiocracy) and TV (the Office, old Sports Nights) on the plane with a monster splitter, and had enough music to enjoy too (every Genesis/Peter Gabriel album for London as we went to see them in concert - and every tropical song I could think of for Hawaii - Iz, Buffet, etc.) A good first effort. And way better than my old Zenith 181! |

The Outlook integration remains deal-killer for me. So now looking at Blackberry Curve for self, iPhone for wife, on ATT family plan, with work paying half. Will probably hold out a few more months, hoping for iPhone to get to where I need it to be.

Yes it has bluetooth,.
Does anyone know when the new applications will start hitting now that there's an open developers kit out ? |

Of course there is always the Jailbreak/AppSnap option now. If you're running 1.1.1 on your iPhone, just point Safari to http://www.jailbreakme.com to begin your journey. :D Best, Kurt |
