Just Got a Blackberry
I purchased one for work/personal. I considered the IPhone, but work email and scheduling made it necessary to go for the Blackberry. Never had one before. I bought the Global one from Verizon (again, a company thing). Anyone know any blackberry tricks. Someone once told me you could take documents attached to an email and "send" them to a nearby fax machine if you new the phone #. Anyone know how to do that or other tricks! Any suggestions on free downloads, etc.

Danny, that's pretty good. Thanks Don for the tips.
Fortunately I respond to about 1 email a day, if that. But I have to admit, I did check it on the way home while driving when I did get an email. Its probably like crack, start off a little and it goes from there.

Just got the new Curve and love it.
One big thing... if you are heading overseas on a shoot or scouting things out, do not leave it turned on to receive data all the time. Its in "roaming mode" and they charge you for every minute its "available to receive data" not just by how much it downloads. Did that last year and the bill for the month was $380... We learn now and turn the "data reception" on for 10 minutes a couple of times a day and get emails then shut the data off. Joe

I have been using one for over a year now and , yeah, it's freakin' addicting!
I have to force nyself to NOT open the email immediately after it comes in. Stupid technology. OTOH, I am on the road most of the day and the convenience of not having to go back to the office to check emails at the end of the day is sweet.

Hugh,
First go apologize to your family for all future transgressions that the CrackBerry will precipitate. ![]() I've had one for over 3 years now, all of a sudden I had to own one for work... I just got the new Blackberry Pearl, like it much better than the others because it's smaller. I always hated the std. BB because i felt like I was talking into a calculator... Anyway a few cool things: 1. With the serial cable you can use the BB with your PC to dial-out to the internet anywhere. 2. Google Maps Mobile works with the GPS (if enabled) and it works really well. Free portable GPS.

Seriously? You mean they charge to have it on as a phone while I'm overseas, whether I'm calling or not. Wow, kind of defeats the purpose of have one that is global in case I get a phone call while traveling. Cstreit, I have a GPS in mine, but its not enabled. You said free GPS, how so? How do I enable and not pay for it? How do I dial out to the internet with my PC and the BB with the serial cable? I guess I should go do some research.

He's talking about data roaming, not voice.
If you have Verizon (I do), they don't enable the GPS on these phones. But the maps feature works fine, you just have to scroll to where you are.

So I can turn off data roaming, and still have voice? The map seems to work in the US only, not the ROW.

My condolences; IMO pagers, cell phones, Blackberries, iPhones, etc. are like electronic cuffs you put on yourself. Now you can be kept track of and can work all the time - sort of a modern slave.

I've had the Blackberry world edition for a couple of months now and I think it's a great phone, emailer, SMs, scheduler and contacts device. I am less keen about its task manager function though. I think the Treo beat it hands down. However, the BB has been problem free since day 1, whereas the Treo would reboot on me in the middle of a phone call. I just wished the BB had a camera.
Thanks for the shortcut buttons, Don! |

World here too. It replaced an older one & it is much better at everything. I don't have to travel with a laptop & my shoulder no longer has to bear the constant pain. Mine is on permanent hum mode.

Well the way mine works is that I downloaded Google maps mobile. It recognizes that the phone has GPS capability and can interface to it. You download and run it, then there is a menu item called "Turn on GPS". Easy Peasy.

For Verizon GPS issues see Answer: Why isn't the native GPS mapping tool available on the BlackBerry 8830

Hugh,
When going overseas just turn off the data portion of the unit. There is a selection on mine to "turn off data when in roaming" and that works as well. I just download emails for a few minutes every so often so that I do not get caught with loads of roaming charges. Thats what kills you ...
