Deer hunting preparations.

Flying into Detroit tomorrow morning, then 8 hours up to Crystal Falls. No detail can be neglected.

A) Writing on a .30-06 shell with a marker is harder than you might think.

B) They're Remington 165gr core locks. Way too big for whitetail....but they were on sale!

Big Smile. :D

What, no bullet with "Your Name" on it?

Off Ramp is going to cry after this thread...

HD, My wife's family is in the Seattle area, but is from Houghton... We try to visit them at least once a year in each place.

Good luck with the Bambis.

Houghton, MI?

I'm there every summer. My wife's family owns some cabins on Portage Lake--they rent them to Michigan Tech students during the year.

I'd seriously like to retire there some day...

"Way too big for white tail"? Nah; I use 180 and 200 grain Partitions on them, depending on which '06 I'm using. My Model 70 likes the 180's and my #1 likes the 200's.

Good luck on your hunt. Make sure "on ramp" gets first shot at it. Hate to see him miss out.

One of these years I'll go deer hunting.

I tried to sight-in my 870 at 50 yards (rifled barrel with open sights) last weekend, but I suck with open sights.

Trick is a light hand, think of painting it on instead of writing. The surface you are writing on is falling away from you on the taper and around the curve of the casing.

Sad that I would know that.

If they are on sale, maybe you should buy a bunch, in case a certain someone gets a BAR and offered to let you shoot it.

My mother in law always shoots the first deer she sees, she does not like sitting out there in the cold.

Am I understanding that you are taking rifles/ammo on the plane? How does one do this?

The Gaijin 11-12-2007 06:48 AM

In checked luggage.

Yep, Family is near Schmidt corner and points north. The 'camp' is on Little America. I'm still learning my way around, but I think that may be close... I love it there.

Yes.

It varies based on airline, so you need to carefully read their policys, and its a good idea to print them out just in case you get some idiot at the ticket desk. I actually had to walk a Northwest employee through the process myself, because she didn't know what to do, but typically this is routine for them.

After you check in, the airline has an agent walk you to a TSA inspection point (Its a little room at Seatac). They ask you to open the case, make sure they are not loaded, then relock the case. The airline agent takes the guns to check through, and you go to security. The ammo can go in your regular baggage. It varies based on airline, but Northwest will take up to 11 pounds (quite a bit).

My dad took a deer in Southern Michigan last year with an H&R single shot. He has a nice Burris 3x9 mounted on it. He uses Hornady SST slugs. You really need a scope or a red dot to place a shot.....and a buddy to gut it for you....:)

Some of you won’t admit to it, but the first thing any hunter that is married needs is a “Kitchen Pass”!

If I do get serious, I will buy a cantilever barrel and a decent scope.

Come to think of it, the only non-shotgun that I shoot well with open sights is my Glock...

Superman 11-12-2007 09:19 AM

Oops.

Ummmm.....you live in the Pacific Northwest and you go Michigan to hunt? Perhaps you have family there. Section 2 in Idaho is a great place for White Tail and Wapiti. They've got better mulies in the South (Colorado, Wyoming, etc). Sure, that's where record bull racks come from also, but Idaho is a good place for hunting success. Section 2, or Section 1, anyway. I agree with Jeff. 180 is a good bullet weight as is 200, especially if it tumbles. It's not going to mess up any meat, unless you shoot the darned thing in the tenderloin.
