The UN Wants to Control The Internet

And if they get it, how long before they start using it as a weapon to bludgeon the U.S.?

"The Internet is transnational. It can't be under the authority of one country or even some countries," said Brazil's Culture Minister Gilberto Gil, who is also a major pop star here, setting the conference's tone at the opening ceremony. "The Internet should be the territory of everyone."
If the UN (or anyone else for that matter) gains control of the Internet, it will become just another political weapon.

Many critics fear opening ICANN up to an organization like the United Nations could allow governments to politicize the Internet and more easily impose censorship. By changing just a few database entries, for instance, all Web sites for a specific country — such as ".mm" in Myanmar — could instantly disappear.

Paul Twomey, ICANN's president and chief executive, said his organization was effectively "international" with only three of its 15 board members coming from the United States. The newly elected chairman is from New Zealand, and Twomey is from Australia.

Twomey said he believed the debate over U.S. control was being fueled by "high politics."

The UN ha!

New York City has threatened to end school trips to the UN building in New York as six year old fire violations have not been fixed.

Do they still have problems with parking tickets?

The UN treats the US like $h!t, and expects to be thanked for the privilege.

Porsche-O-Phile 11-13-2007 05:24 AM

How is the UN even still relevant?

Rearden 11-13-2007 05:59 AM

US out of UN, UN out of US.

The UN is now worse than irrelevant.

It took me years to realize that this is now needed. They are against the USA and yet want to meet here, screw us with their not following laws and want us to pay for it too boot.

Its time to get out of the UN... and move their frigging building out of our country.

United Nations, who are they? OH, those guys in pretty powder blue helmets! Cute!

I wonder what Al Gore will have to say about the UN wanting to take control of his invention?
Of course knowing Al he's all for the UN running everything (except his fossil fuel consumption).

Nah. The international elite Davos crowd are not burdened by the same set of rules they'll prepare for the rest of us.

You tell 'em. Dang liberal Idiots. They didn't learn their lesson when we found WMD. They didn't learn when we created peace in Iraq. They didn't learn when we solved the immigration problem. Heck, they probly don't even know how good a driver Dale Earnhart was. Idiots.

The Internet is just a plot to educate people. That's the problem. If people weren't learning stuff all the time, this crap wouldn't be happening. Between the hunting magazines at the barber shop and the hymnals at church, I've got all the information I need.

IMHO if ICANN is moved to UN control, 2 things would become apparent.

ICANN is extremely slow as is in their processes, the UN would simply add layers upon layers of bureaucratic BS to an already slow to move body.

ICANN (I'm not 100% sure on this) would get a protective layer from lawsuits, court injunctions, and other legal processes. As of now they are an independent corporation (leaned on by govt I'm sure, note .xxx domain intervention) but should they screw something up, are accountable as such and can be ordered to redress their wrongdoings. The UN has been notorious for sliding follies and debacles under the rug only to be discovered when something spectacular comes along to wake everyone up.

That cuts both ways though. It also means that ICANN (or whatever UN body presumably would take over) will have zero accountability to anyone. Imagine if some decision that majorly hosed how domain names are used today was made?

They may not know how good he was, but I'd bet they can spell his name correctly :)! And furthemore, without the UN, how could GWB have justified ousting Sadaam if he wasn't violating their sanctions...see, WE do need the UN afterall...
