There 'should' be two or three letters stamped into the left side of the barrel next to the receiver that make up the date code. Mine also has $25 stamped into the right side of the barrel. Don't know if that was the original price or not.

Remingtons have a somewhat arcane date code on the barrell/receiver area. Even with the format I haven't been especially sucessful at determining the age of a number of them.
Serial numbering of American made firearms wasn't made manditory untill 1968.

Yep, that's why you guys have me wanting a rifle to go along w/ my .22LR Colt Diamondback. Make no mistake, I love my large calibers but it's just too pricey to go through boxes and boxes of ammo (unlike back in the day when I purchased them).

As mentioned going in person to see what fits is the ideal approach.
Kurt, did you buy at a local shop or a Walmart type place?

Yes it is a smaller framed rifle. My girl is only 4' tall right now, but it still is a bit long for her.

I bought it at a local sporting goods shop. They had to order it for me. Took about 4 days to get it in. There was no obligation to buy it if I didn't like it.

I posted a similar thread regarding my 7 year old daughter a couple of months ago. Got her the Savage Cub bolt action .22. Is a smaller model that is easier for kids to use. But it has the quality of a full size .22. Has a nice peep sight in the rear that kids seem to find more intuitive for finding a good sight picture. Cost me $179.00

That is a deal.

Yes, Ruger 10/22 with monte carlo stock is perfect. Accurate, lightweight and easy to use controls and easy to load. Just use the factory magazines as the aftermarket hi-cap mags are questionable.

My alltime favourite .22 plinker is my Remington M540 target gun. Heavy but will outshoot anything out there.

Some good advice given . If it's going to be used for plinking also a 10/22 is a good bet .

If just for target I'd try to find a used Anshutz in 22lr .

Not many on auction right now , here's one .... http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=85469102 .

If she's not keen on shooting you're not out much with the 10/22 and still you'd have a good plinker/squirrel gun .
