P-38 found on beach.....
|
Cool stuff indeed! There are those who argue that the P-38 was the best aircraft of the war.
|
Outstanding. Saw Glacier Girl at the Reno Air Races this year and Wings Over Wine Country had one flying. A great sight and a great airplane.
|
I'm wondering when they plan to pull the a/c out......If it was discovered in July, I'm amazed that the news of it's discovery hasn't been more publicized.
|
I want one.

How about this?
http://lend-lease.airforce.ru/english/articles/sheppard/p39/index.htm P-39 found in a lake in 5 meters of water. Very nice condition considering... and glad that the pilot was finally given a proper burial. |
people obsess over old warbirds. here's the story of BW-372. it's got indiana jones type adventures, finnish fighter aces, the russian mafia, etc.

Great down on the deck; not so good at altitude due to compressibility problems. Withdrawn from the European theater as better fighter aircraft became available. Did much better in the Pacific where its range and firepower gave advantages. Very problematic forced induction system - good thing it was twin engined. Wing tip intercoolers were innovative but not so great in operational use. IMO, a beautiful aircraft; a shame so many in perfect operating condition were cut up for scrap. |
About 10 P-38s flew that secret mission which shot down Yamamoto's Betty in '42, killing Admiral Yamamoto, the Japanese Naval commander of the Pearl Harbor attack.
That was their most famous mission. |
