Fighter jet video thread

Wow, Just figured out that there are a whole bunch of really good fighter jet videos on the net.
This one is nuts, the russians took thrust vectoring to unreal levels:

This one is cool and artsy, gives me goosebumps

Any favorites out there?

Austin, that is cool. I had no idea there werec still planes like that flying, even if they are recreations.
How do you imbed a video? i haven't figured that one out yet.

Here's a vido of a jet flying low level through the swiss alps. I put it on full screen and got queazy. About three minutes into it, the pilot climbs the matterhorn. I mean he climbs it, can't be more than 100 feet from the face as he goes up. Wild. Had me reaching for the airsick bag.

There is a link marked "embeded" by the video. Just copy the link and paste.

Missiles are more maneuverable than jets...all the cobra stunt-like moves only increases the jets heat signature. And missiles cost less.

I love the boys with toys stuff (been there), but from a military point of view, it is the sound and the fury.

Seahawk,

How about a qualified maybe on the increase in IR, depending on circumstances? Probably a factorial increase in grape factor though.

It is fun flying w/in a wingspan of the ground on -9s, add in some ridge crossings and blind canyons...

I was hoping my favorite jet puke would show up

We talk about this all the time at NAVAIR and OPNAV, kind of a running dialog: What came last, the missile or the jet.

The days of low level attack have been over since GWI...air to air is a different equation.

BTW, nap of the earth on goggles will bring you close to the band from Aberdeen, WA

Seahawk,

Gotta disagree on the days of the low level in a threat environment. Between making room for UAVs, VID requirements, weather, it is sometimes safer to fly in low. There is a video of some Marine Fixed “over” Iraq. It became so common place to fly that low and watch small arms, RPGs, and the occasional manpad fly over that one guy made a video. Actually focused outside the cockpit so one could see things flying and would focus on the radalt.

There are valid requirements in the relatively low threat environment and the actual USMC defined CAS arena. I do not count the battle field interdiction (as the USAF does) as CAS.

Use to scare the helos and get complaints with Marine Herks and Hornets flying below them. Only the SOAR didn’t complain, they just commented that proved they weren’t low enough. The Dogfaces actually have some good folks.

Ever seen a Cobra flak trap? Basically some Cobras hang-out along a path that the other guy is likely (enticed) to come down. Cobra pops up and simulates 2.75s, etc. w/flares. The de-briefs are lots of fun, especially the Eagle bubbas as they rarely look out for helos as a threat.

sammy... that vid of the planes breaking the sound barrier is pretty awesome...

here's one of my favorites:

this isn't jets, but its one of my favorites... although it'd be much better with a nose-mounted camera..

Iraq now is different. Going LL in Irag in a jet...live the dream.

I went through MAWTS in the late 80's and was bounced once in my SH-60 by a Harrier...I spent the rest of the course looking for revenge. Live and learn.

I also never lost a 1 v 1 with a Hornet in the hills.

Seahawk,

Actually both Herks and Hornets were doing it in 04 and 05 also. The Lawn Dart (I mean Harrier) spent most of their time up in the holding pattern and are far more vulnerable to manpads, small arms and small birds.

In the hills it is a matter of fuel, and luck. Who can hang around. I remember the 1st time I suckered a big engined Tomcat into a low level fight over Korea to use the hills. Use to be get them tochase on down, they lost mucho energy, reverse and finish. This time, down ridge cross kind of a pylon turn and look back to ensure he has unloaded and finished. He is falling back but not very quickly and has a better fuel fraction, lucky draw.

There are different tactics than using the gun on a helo. Actually a Herk can turn inside of any of the teen series. Watch a good Herk driver pull back the inside engine and give a little bottom rudder and see him gain in a circle fight. One of the better ones was the USAF aggressors out of Nellis, had only fought straight trash hauling Herks and w/10,000’ hard deck. Basically crew put a video camera on the dash and was bounced while low with the Viper coming from high 0800. By one turn the Herk had gained and was at the Viper’s 0800.
