SOUTHWORTH, Wash. - A man trying to loosen a stubborn lug nut blasted the wheel with a 12-gauge shotgun, injuring himself badly in both legs, sheriff's deputies said.

The 66-year-old man had been repairing a Lincoln Continental for two weeks at his home northwest of Southworth, about 10 miles southwest of Seattle, and had gotten all but one of the lug nuts off the right rear wheel by Saturday afternoon, Kitsap County Deputy Scott Wilson said.

"He's bound and determined to get that lug nut off," Wilson said.

From about arm's length, the man fired the shotgun at the wheel and was "peppered" in both legs with buckshot and debris, with some injuries as high as his chin, according to a sheriff's office report.

"Nobody else was there and he wasn't intoxicated," Wilson said.

The man was taken to Tacoma General Hospital with injuries Wilson described as severe but not life-threatening.

M.D. Holloway 11-19-2007 12:49 PM

and how many times have any of us wanted to take a 12 gauge to a stubburn bolt? Well, I guess not many but I bet there was some Pabst Blue Ribbon to blame here...

varmint 11-19-2007 01:50 PM

did the lug nut come off?

livi 11-19-2007 02:08 PM

You Americans seem to invent the most ridiculous excuses to fire your guns. :D

It's really not an excuse.

We believe almost any problem can be solved by proper application of a firearm.

Unfortunately, the idiot survived, so that problem was not solved. Darwinism didn't go far enough here.

Good thread! :D

When I was a kid, we lived across the street from a Tennessee State Trooper. One of the other kids in the neighborhood got a kite stuck in one of his trees and it bugged the guy to death, so one day he got his 12 gauge shotgun out and started blasting away at the kite trying to get it out of the tree. It worked, so I guess a shotgun can be used as a tool on occasion.

Many of the oak trees in southern Oregon have mistletoe growing in them. The mistletoe grows in little concentrated patches. It looks like a green bush transplanted onto a leaf-bare oak tree (in the late fall and winter). To harvest the mistletoe, alot of people use a shotgun...

They aim at the mistletoe cluster and pull the trigger. BANG! Mistletoe everywhere! They pick up the good pieces and sell them at local markets. Crazy as it sounds, it's probably safer than a tall ladder on uneven ground.

A friend of mine and his dad went x-mass tree hunting without an ax or a saw. They used a shotgun, it only took three shots.

I saw a news reporter covering a story around here (in AL/TN) where a guy was using a .22 to shoot the mistletoe out of a tree. I guess the point is clear......use whatever tool you need!
