Gift suggestions ? 50th anniversary

What would be suitable gift to buy for your parents on their 50th wedding anniversary? Budget is not really important.

They are both elderly and my father is not in good health, so he won't travel. That rules out the Carribian cruises and world travel.

Any good suggestions from the Pelican brain trust?

Not really. They are both in their late 70's. My dad's only real hobby is doing all sorts of crossword puzzles and reading lots.

I was thinking some nice his/hers wristwatches with the dates engraved on the back, but am looking for more innovative gift ideas.

I guarantee they would treasure that...great idea! Try to collect the photos "incognito", and surprise them if you can.

Good idea, but might be sifficult to actually achieve. The event is in 3 weeks' time and I'm 300 miles away.

How 'bout a party with a wedding reception theme? Complete with a weddding cake/grooms cake, bouquet for your mom, decorations, modest wedding presents, yadadadadada? Hire a photographer and compile a "new" wedding album. Family dresses the part as groomsmen/bridesmaids...get a tux for your dad and a nice off white dress for your mom. Have music from their era. Take your dad out for a "bachelor's" party the night before. A little campy, but they'd probably get a kick out of it...

Not sure whether you have something similar in the area - but we were recently faced with the same question.

We wanted my parents to get out more - and discovered a great Tennis/social club just around the corner from them where we bought them non-playing memberships. (We have the monthly chits sent directly to us as part of the gift.)

In any case they have taken to this like ducks to water - and go there virtually every day for a glass of wine, or a sandwich or a game of bridge. Probably the best gift we could have given them.

Gold is the traditional 50th

or you could do this......

If you know a couple who is celebrating 50 years or more of marriage, or who was just been married, you can have an anniversary greeting or wedding congratulations sent to them from the White House.

Generally, the anniversary greetings from the White House are mailed around fourteen days before the anniversary. Wedding greetings are mailed after the wedding date.

There is a limit on the number of greeting requests you can submit per day.

Requirements:
U.S. citizenship

Advance notice of at least six weeks

All required information included in request
Who will be receiving the greeting.

Address to send the greeting.

How to address the greeting.

Date (mm/dd/yyyy) of the wedding or anniversary.

Your name and daytime phone number.

How to Send Greetings Requests:
Mail:
The White House
Attn: Greetings Office
Washington, D.C.

When my Dad turned 75 my sisters and I bought him a laptop and a wireless.

He loved it and the fact that he could communicate from anywhere in his hooch.
