Anyone on the list near or in Palm Springs CA?

Have a possible job offer in the area and looking for input.

Know that the house market is not going to be cheap but would not live in town but either La Quinta or that area outside of the ritzy places. Selling my place here is not going to be pretty but hopefully the market will rebound a bit if this plan jells.

Several other possible problems and the first one comes with my 1985 911 that has a 3.6 shoehorned in the back. Legal and no issues (with no cat) here in Arizona but not sure what it would take to make street legal in California.

Also have a 1969 car that needs special treatment but believe that its past the smog cutoff date?

Have the option of leaving them registered here in Arizona or with a friend in New Mexico but looking at options.

Would appreciate any ideas on cars or housing in this area.

Pre-1975 is exempt from the smog nazis (one of the reason I bought a '74).

Your '85 is screwed. Not a chance. You'd have to find a place that was willing to sign the car off illegally, or pay them off. Even then, you'd still be vulnerable to detection by L.E. or roadside smog detectors (yes, those are a reality here although they're supposely not yet certified for actual enforcement duty, but they're being tested in a pilot program). You'd have to do it "track only". I am in the same dilemma with my Callaway 944 (which is also an '85). If I build it and put all the pieces onto it, it'll be an absolute nightmare to get through the bureaucrats - probably impossible. Only way around would be to return it to stock for smog inspection, then re-install all the fun parts. Not sure I want to go through all that B.S. every two years.

Thanks for the input. What about putting a cat on the car (I still have the original 1985 exhaust that had a cat) and getting it inspected, then putting the aftermarket system back on?

Otherwise registering it in AZ or NM might be my only chance...

I have a sister and brother-in-law there. They own the Goodyear building at Bermuda Dunes, but not the business anymore. He still works there for some reason, could tell you what you need to bring the car in.
I left in '84, I hear the area has changed a bit since then.

And you will get pulled over every two blocks asking for your license/registration. If you show a CA lic. and out-of-state reg, you will be given a ticket to comply and have your car inspected/registered with CA plates within 10 ~ 30 days. Been there, done that.

On the other hand. Put the plates from your '69 on your '85 when driving it. Most donut-dunkers won't know the difference (and just how often do you get pulled over anyway?).

Joe didn't say his "69 was a Porsche. Many LEO's are car buffs and would know the difference between a '69 and '85........Fines are HUGE for switched plates - often results in impound also.......

A lot of smog places will also just look under your '85 and assume the heat exchangers are cats. There are not a lot of places that know 911s very well. I think the law says that you have to install all of the smog equipment original to the engine if you have done a transplant. If you install a cat you can probably be OK, but you may need to rig up some sort of a check engine light. What sort of exhaust do you have now?

Small problem is that the 1969 is a old Jaguar and no way that any LE would mistake that for a 1985 911! Good try though!

Ron, might entertain that idea. Still have not signed anything but looking for options. Would like to hold onto my house in Phoenix for as long as possible so that the value comes back up, but then the values in PSP would have risen as well.

Might look more into keeping everything registered in Arizona. Seems to be the best way and I own land here, and drivers license still valid here so might be easier!

A typical smog station won't know what engine should be in the SC, but they'll look for a cat, pump, factory intake.

More importantly, don't forget about taxes. California sucks more out of you.....

If you do register it in CA give the DMV a low value on the car. The fee is based on the car's value. Could be the difference between $45/year and $500 or more.

Some would, but most wouldn't. Multiply that by the amount of time you (responsible, safe, Caucasian, middle-aged driver) plan to be pulled over on the side of the road by a donut-dunker and chances of being "discovered" are nil.

Am looking forwards to retirement and this job is being dangled in front of me. Its flying for a well known family in the area who fly only 2-250 hours a year. Am looking for something that would allow me to have more of a personal life and slow down a bit.

I left home on the 21st of October and due to return home for Christmas (hopefully) but now the company is asking if I could possibly stay on this airplane until the 18th of January. That would be 3 months out, and missing three major holidays in life. Money is not that important to get me to do this, so am looking for something else.

To tell the truth am getting tired of being gone from home so much and more than that being gone for 2-3 months at a time. Then you add being in some hot spots around the world or wonderful garden spots like Africa, its just places that I do not need to fly to any longer.

I think that living in the PS area would be great, assuming that a person knows what dessert living is about and can stand the heat, etc... Coming from Phoenix, I don't see a problem.

It's a really beautiful part of the world, I just love it. I hope you do it!

As far as the 911 slap some cats on it and if it passes smog you should be OK... I have no personal experience but I see a lots custom cars running around S. Cal that are not running stock innards.

there's over 100 golf courses within a short drive of La Quinta. Wild guess is the club bar is where the action is?

The property values in PS are favorable compared to LA.

On the car issue, I'd buy a cheap 996 like Denis did and have the A/C. For a hot rod, go the early route, but that's not guaranteed forever that the smog rules will remain static. I've thrown in the towel and drive a cat equipped DD.
