Single speed project done.
 

I posted an earlier thread, but wanted to post the results to show the difference. I worked harder on this than I anticipated. The 'after' photo is a bit dirty, but I have been riding the snot out of this bike! I know the whole single speed fad is fading, but I so enjoy just pushing the big gear. And the steel frame.....smooth classic ride. I decided against paint because I wanted to keep the 70s Fuji paint scheme. So many of these single speed projects are over done, a total destruction of the original bike. I wanted to keep the spirit of the bike there......

Changes:

-Shimano WH550 wheelset.
-Performance single speed kit.
-Sella saddle.
-Laprade Seatpost
-Tekro Brake levers
-Fizik bar tape.
-pedals
-All new cables and housings.

Total cost is probably in the $450-500 range. All the big names have started making single speeds, so for that cost, you could get a 'new' single speed. Kind of lame though.....

btw, that reflective sticker right below the seat tube is an old Sioux City, South Dakota bike license. Kind of an interesting artifact considering I bought the bike here in Seattle. Ya never know where the old steel has been.....bike or cars.....women for that matter.....:)

are you using a fixed gear? is there any pros/cons vs a freewheel gear?

yes, going downhill and stopping is much more of a challenge in a fixie.

i have also just completed a fixed rebuild/conversion.

picked up an 80's ultima (kuwahara built) 12sp on ebay from for 40 odd bucks. removed, cleaned, greased everything. flipped/chopped the bars. had the original rear wheel rebuilt with a fixed hub. the bike shop threw in the matching red chain...

back into riding after a decent absence and loving it. (may add some risers bars for a little more shoulder comfort)

i too did not want to destroy the original bike - thus kept the slighlty scratched paint, the worn saddle (with porsche script turbo insignia!) and the dull (but straight) original mavic 27 1/4 rims.
