Chavez Ready to Rumble
CARACAS (Reuters) - Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez moved tanks to the Colombian border and mobilized fighter jets on Sunday, warning Bogota could spark a war after its troops struck inside another of its neighbors, Ecuador.

Chavez is a buffoon (which is not to say he's not dangerous). He can't make a ground incursion into Colombia and make it stick, especially if he's not the one being invaded.
He'll have his nose bloodied if he tries anything further than his orangutan chest-beating... and this stunt does not distract "his" people from the Mugabe-like statist ruin he's turning his country into. Other than an opportunity to slap down a pompous shytbag, I have little interest in this. JP

NOW it gets interesting....
Colombia Files Show Chavez Funded FARC, Rebels Sought Uranium By Helen Murphy March 3 (Bloomberg) -- Colombia's police chief Oscar Naranjo said documents from the computer of a guerrilla leader killed last weekend in Ecuador show links to Venezuela's President Hugo Chavez. The documents on the computer of Raul Reyes, the second in command of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, indicate that Venezuela provided the guerrillas with at least $300 million and would help Chavez in the event of a U.S. attack on Venezuela. Naranjo said the FARC, as the group is known, was seeking to buy 50 kilos of uranium for bomb making with aim of getting involved in international terrorism. To contact the reporter on this story: Helen Murphy in Bogota at Hmurphy1@bloomberg.net . ________________________________ And Chavez' latest stunt is to call Colombia the "Israel of South America". He did it in a pejorative way... irony not being his strong suit. JP

If Columbia and Venezuela do get into a tussle, does anyone think Venezuela's oil production is threatened?
I don't but that won't stop oil traders from driving up the price. Venezuela is going to need money to fight a war. What do they have that the world needs that they can sell? If this goes, I foresee a short-term increase in oil prices and a longer-term decline.

Well, if we really want to attack a country and liberate it for oil, I think Venezuela would be a good place to start.

a more likely scenario would be to splat Chavez's aircraft and then bust up his armored forces.
then Columbia can take care of all the troops, trucks, supply lines, etc. |

I think so few flights of B2's on some Venezuelans wouldn't be over the line. Nothing super important, just a few of forces posed to be a problem on the border.
He prolly ran out of Coke. |

Just "splat" another nation's military that poses no threat to our nation! That is an incredible supposition.
It is no small wonder that our leaders often take such dangerous and questionable actions when so many of our citizens talk like idiots and seem to have lost track of how the most powerful nation on the planet should act. |

So let's see, Chavez will need $$$ to fight with 7 so will Columbia. I foresee a drop in the price of both gas & coke!

- Second, we have treaty obligations with Columbia. If they are invaded, we are bound to help. - Third, taking out a small air force and tanks (from the air) is far preferable to an invasion or the killing of large numbers of people (soldiers) - don't you think? - Fourth, if he invaded, what action would you advocate? Sometimes a bad option is the best one. Would you allow Chavez to take over another country? Would you allow him to make a punitive strike? What would you allow? These are all very serious issues and the question of how the most powerful nation on Earth should act is not an easy one. Inaction can be worse in some circumstances. Do you think this would be one of them? |

We have made excuses for doing exactly that for over 40 years and it seldom ends well. And sometimes it is at the cost of American lives. What in Colombia or Venezuela is worth a member of your family? |
