Blue Shop Towels

We have been using blue shop towels in the kitchen (instead of ordinary paper towels) for some time because they are much tougher, more absorbent and last longer etc etc.

The other night a dinner guest saw this, freaked out and said something like: " Jesus Christ those things are made from asbestos and industrial waste - and you use them in the kitchen?"

I replied with "you're pulling my plonker right?" - but the guy was adamant about this.

Now I always just assumed they were just a better and pricier towel. There's nothing on the package that says you shouldn't use them in the kitchen - and given the litigious society in which we live I would have assumed there would be some kind of warning if they were truly hazardous.

Anybody else have any thoughts on this?

Tell the old woman buddy to chillax.

I haven't researched this but I'd be very surprised if ANYTHING contains asbestos anymore, let alone something intended to be used to wipe grease off your hands and face.

I wouldn't be surpised if those towels are made out of recycled cloth but its probably shredded and cooked to remove the old dyes and by the time it is woven into new material and sewn into shop towels it is more sanitary than your hands are every day of the week!

They don't even use asbestos in brake pads and clutches anymore, so what makes that guy think that they'd put them in paper towels.

Sounds like someone loves conspiracies.

Well that's what I thought too...but this guy, who is otherwise quite a rational individual, just flipped out.

Thanks for the responses.

Your dinner guest sounds like a moron.

Asbestos? LOL. Yeah, they make shop towels with asbestos, and a little PCB to give them that nice blue color. And don't forget the polonium 210...
