I am so done with Verizon!
 

I posted about this before. I bought a Verizon Blackberry which is their "World" cell phone. I take it to Vancouver, Canada and only the phone works, not the data part. I call them and it turns out I need to call them before I leave the country to tell them what countries I'll be going to before I leave, so they can switch on the international service, and then call them when I get back to turn it off (they surcharge per day for this).

I get back and my email won't work, I have to reprogram my phone every time I return. Did that and the email still doesn't work, they're trying to figure out why. It worked here before I left. Verizon is puzzled because they don't consider Canada to be international! Whats it going to do in Prague of Iceland or Malta when I travel there if a few months. My colleagues with AT&T had no problems whatsoever. I'm out here with Verizon.

BTDT today. My email is non functional since I canceled my DSL this morning. The things is, I had FIOS installed 2 weeks ago. I just wanted to make sure everything was up to par before canceling the DSL. I called them and spoke to a techie for over a half hour. No email yet. Simple to me, not to them.

It's a corporate thing.....see my recent thread on Dish Network... Just what exactly do these CEO's and V* folks learn in business school?

Was riding an airline a couple of months ago and the guy next to me was a Verizon exec. He saw my new ATT Blackberry and made the pitch for my business.

Then I told him I was heading to London and working overseas for a while and he finally admitted that Verizon did not care one bit about international calling and was concentrating solely on business in the US.

ATT or T-Mobile are the best providers for someone who travels overseas IHMO.

Verizon -World phone. Kind of a joke since their primary chosen technology is CDMA and not GSM/UMTS.

In order for them to offer a world product which Tmobile has always offered, they had to find a unit that worked in both code division as well as time division. 2 technologies in one device and with all the different frequency bands used throughout the world.
Typically Verizon is for domestic users.

For international, you should go with Tmobile (owned by DT) or ATT (US carrier).

Don't start me ranting about Verizon. I wrote a blog not too long ago complaining about their lack of good service and phones. It's taken over 2 years before I finally have found a phone I'm interested in that they carry (previously it was only Cingular that carried it) but since the rest of my family is with verizon, I'm kinda stuck with it for a bit...sigh.

hope things work out for you! My dad has a verizon blackberry (only it's not a 'true' blackberry since his company switched to a different maker...and he's been very unhappy with its ability to do email and voicemail as well as service...)

Tell your Father to try ATT and their 'berry. Works great and does everything at one time, not just one thing at a time.

VZ used to have a big advantage in coverage, but not so much anymore.

They've always had the oldest and most boring phones, that may improve in late 2008 when they open up to unlocked phones - not sure, being TDMA makes it weird.

They still have the best wireless data system with EVDO.

Bottomline, I've been a VZ customer for almost 7 years, but am planning to switch our phones to AT&T. There I can get an iPhone for the wife and a iPhone or Blackberry Curve for me, and better functioning outside of the US. Will leave the datacard with VZ.

P.S. Plus, VZ were total jerks to me a couple yrs ago, I bought a new Blackberry from them, it was never delivered by FedEX (lost, stolen, ???) and VZ insisted I would have to pay the full price of the lost unit plus buy the replacement at full price - pointing out to them that I was a long-time high-value customer paying for two Blackberries with full data plans plus EVDO card w/ data plan made no difference at all - I finally got out of paying (had to get FedEX involved after forcing them to admit was not a valid signature waiver on file) - but after that I let my VZ contracts expire so that I could leave them whenever I wanted to.
