Dads: magnets for buttons on pants?

for 12M through size 4T, what do you think of magnets for buttons on pants.

We've heard it all about snaps, slide clips, and buttons/holes and no kid is up to any of these, yet the entire industry uses any and all of them.

Would you, or more importantly your wife, have an objection to a contoured magnet where a button would usually go? Any concerns about magnets being so close to the body?

berettafan 11-29-2007 06:58 AM

no objection (doesn't the golf set think magnets make them tiger woods or something?) but wouldn't expect them to work. we have been happy with elastic waistbands.

Great until you get two kids with their pants stuck to each other.

legion 11-29-2007 07:15 AM

Shaun, I could see a kid easily worming themself out of their clothes with magnets. Do you have any friends with kids? Maybe you could make a prototype and send it home with them. Get some real-world feedback.

frogger 11-29-2007 07:16 AM

velcro

dhoward 11-29-2007 07:16 AM

Magnets would be cool on little kid's pants. After working on your car, you could drag them underneath to pick up all of the 'spares'...

stealthn 11-29-2007 07:17 AM

I think it'll decrease swimmer output :D

Gogar 11-29-2007 07:20 AM

I think it's positive, because it will train your kid for his future as a Chippendale Dancer.;)

Aerkuld 11-29-2007 07:26 AM

Here's another response...

I understand the attraction.

I suspect that it would be expensive compared to alternative forms of simple fastener. On the other hand magnets are really cool. Obviously they would have to be non-ferrous or at least sealed in a rust proof casing/coating.

I think kids under that age of four should be made to wear fuzzy pants. Then you could fit the velcro hooks to things like restaurant chairs, car seats, etc. so the kids will stay put until you peel them back off.

id10t 11-29-2007 07:30 AM

If they somehow got "out" of the clothes, the magnets can be a BIG hazzard if swallowed (only two or more... just one and you'll be OK). Something about pinching tissue between the 2 (or more) and stopping blood flow and dying tissue...

We have lots of elastic waistband pants for our son (not quite 4), forget what we used for the daughter (she's 7 now). Big snaps work OK, maybe a bigger buttonfly type arrangement?

dhoward 11-29-2007 07:31 AM

Make them giant, un-swallowable magnets.
More surface area for cleanup after that roofing job.

Best idea EVER! Quick, get a patent on that idea! :D

Spoken like a true dad. THat's an awesome idea!

Wait, I just thought about how my son would react. I'd turn away and find his pants stuck on the chair and him running in his Go! Diego underware though the restaurant.

frogger 11-29-2007 07:42 AM

It would be an improvement on his power-to-weight ratio. :)

<rimshot>

thank you folks, he'll be here all week. Try the veal.

osidak 11-29-2007 08:32 AM

I think it would work and at that age I would not worry about kids putting any loose ones in their mouths

We have been getting our 4 y/o pants with snaps and since he is tall and thin it is pretty damn tough to find pants that fit right.

911boost 11-29-2007 09:29 AM

Magnents could be bad, I second the comment on the kids swallowing them. Not that all kids would, but the freakish moms and dads (you know the type, the ones that actually post reveiews for items, like "my 8 month fell out of this high chair, so I don't reccomend it", but what they aren't sayng is that they left the baby alone in the high chair....) would squash the whole magnent thing.

Vipergrün 11-29-2007 09:30 AM

Naw, it would cause all of the iron in the body to gather in the genital region and possibly rust the important parts.....just a thought :)

Hugh R 11-29-2007 09:32 AM

Just don't get them near your wallet, bye,bye credit cards. Try and get the kid on a plane past security.

Beat me to it. I know some girls that would benefit from the quick release feature.

jyl 11-29-2007 10:20 AM

I second the velcro, or simply elastic waist.

Magnets seem cool but after the novelty wears off think would be expensive, could detach, and most of all I don't see what advantage they have.

stomachmonkey 11-29-2007 10:26 AM

Part of growing up is learning the fine motor skills required to button ones shirt or pants.

The sooner they learn the happier you are as a parent.

I don't think they'd be strong enough.

Would make a hell of a racket in the washer/dryer.

berettafan 11-29-2007 10:29 AM

would they stick to the bin in the washer/dryer as well?

LeeH 11-29-2007 10:37 AM

Just make sure to pay a royalty to the patent holder.

Yes. That would be a big problem.

Also, the swallowing thing, if they come loose is a real danger. A number of kids have died from this. As previous said, one magnet is not a problem, but more than that can be fatal. No matter how well attached, it would be a PR issue.

Shaun @ Tru6 11-29-2007 04:44 PM

Thank you everyone for weighing in. All our zip pants have the internal adjustable waistband, I think we'll keep going with buttons and make the holes a little bigger, same with the sherpa corduroy and denim jackets planned for next year.
