91 Diesel Jetta, what's it worth?

Bought this car new in 91. It's got 185k, is in overall good condition and it's time to sell.

I put it on Craig's list @ $1500 (based on kelly), the phone is ringing off the hook and people are bidding more than asking price site unseen.

I'm not a jetta or diesel enthusiast, so I don't know he value of the car. But it seems I've underpriced.

I'm guessing there is a some group out there that want's these cars bad.... for veg oil conversions or something.

What's the going price?

Definitely more than $1500. I bought a '97 TDI from a local guy, put it on Ebay and almost doubled my money.

I would say about $7500 with no mechanical issues. If gas goes up another dime add $1000? lol

The diesels are in great demand, especially somewhere like San Jose. Your in biodiesel/geek heaven.

Diesel VW's always seem to have a small but fanatical following. Having said that, would someone seriously pay $7500 for a 16 year old car with 185k miles? I sold my 1990 gas Jetta for $250, but it was getting rough

hard to compare a 91 to a 97... the 97 is a TDi (direct injection), whereas the 91 is an idi (indirect injection). The 97 is an A3 bodystyle too.

Just the same, I'm always suprised by the demand for vw diesel stuff down in the states. I'm assuming that's a turbo... if in good shape, it could go for 2500-4k. A car that's beat is really only going to be bought for its diesel engine. Lots of demand in california, as the VWs are dead easy to convert to vegetable oil.

The engines are also popular for suzuki samurai swaps, I have one in mine.

Heck, a good running TD engine will fetch a grand in California. I buy them up here for $2-300 and sell the parts into the states where they are harder to find. I'd ship whole engines if the freight wasn't so scary.
