Can they really be serious?

Or is it more"Hey look at us we're defiant!" BS? I'm talking about the small number of Sudanese Muslims calling for the execution of British school teacher Gibbons . Her crime? She allowed her Sudanese class to name a teddy bear Muhammed.

lendaddy 11-30-2007 12:28 PM

I can't help but think that our media s over-blowing this. Perhaps I give the Muslims too much credit, but I really have to believe it just a fringe group of weirdos calling for her execution.

Steve Carlton 11-30-2007 12:31 PM

My understanding is most Sudanese can't believe this crap, either. Part of the problem is they don't understand the meaning of a teddy bear.

tabs 11-30-2007 12:44 PM

I resent a Teddy Bear having the name "Muhammed" it gives a bad name to Teddy Bears all over.

livi 11-30-2007 12:51 PM

Mind boggling. Elvis must be crinching in his coffin.

And don´t get me started on muslies..

Porsche-O-Phile 11-30-2007 12:54 PM

Did the teddy bear at least come with its own little explosive suicide bomber belt?

VINMAN 11-30-2007 01:05 PM

From what I understand, the teddy bear had changed his name to "Muhammed" while he was in prison.

varmint 11-30-2007 01:08 PM

Almost 100 people died in rioting over the cartoons last year. What will it take before you accept that they really are that crazy?

Vipergrün 11-30-2007 02:23 PM

....Yet, we are suppose to open our arms and accept "them" (yes, those people) into our country, oh, and we must stop celebrating Christmas because it offends them. Oh, and we must put little foot washing stations where they work. Oh yeah, they want extended breaks throughout the day to pray.... Perhaps we should be a bit more intolerant.

Moneyguy1 11-30-2007 03:28 PM

Anyone think the problem could be reduced in scope by eliminating the rabble-rousing clerics?

Yep, they're serious. To think, these are the people some of our lefties insist we can reach an understanding with.

"Don't try to understand 'em, just rope, herd, and brand 'em"...Rawhide.

sammyg2 11-30-2007 04:44 PM

She is in jail right now.
Part of the original sentence included flogging.
They have moved her to a secret location to prevent those who are protesting from getting to her and killing her.
sounds to me like you need to cut them some slack, not.

A cruise missle aimed right in the middle of the protesters calling for her death might be what's called for.

So far we tried being tolerant, we tried being the good guy, all that did was give them more slack to become more extreme. The more we act like liberal wimps, the stronger they get.
Game over.

Porsche-O-Phile 11-30-2007 04:53 PM

I'm with sammy on this one. This B.S. only ends when either they ("they" being radical religious extremists) or we are destroyed entirely. I'd just assume it be them.

Hunt the enemy. Find the enemy. Kill the enemy.

Problem solved.

WTF? Too much free time.

They don't get it.

I doubt it. He came by here yesterday. Said he needed a fluffer..

Anyway, be interesting to hear how the British Government will be handling this.

I say, send in 007.

Steve PH 12-01-2007 04:10 AM

According to some of the more high brow British news papers, this really is political gamesmanship by the Sudanese. They don't like western governments and will use any excuse to make them look weak. This teacher really is something of a convenient scape goat.

This isn't the first time this sort of thing has happened in Sudan.

Interesting bit of back story here, its really worth a read and shows what lengths the Sudanese government will go to.

Bill Verburg 12-01-2007 11:03 AM

The radicals are just using it as an excuse, the "muslim" children did the actual naming and besides isn't that one of the more popular names in the Muslim world, next to Ali

come to think of it wasn't there a boxer revered in that part of the world that went by that name.

The Sword of the Prophet, should be required reading for every American.

Mule 12-01-2007 11:33 AM

The documentary channel has a show on right now about the peace loving muslims in Iran telling the citizens that they can sell kidneys, but the govt ends up keeping the money. Allah smackbar.

jyl 12-01-2007 12:34 PM

The small crowd of protestors was mostly government employees who had been ordered to demonstrate.

http://www.nytimes.com/2007/12/01/world/africa/01sudan.html

Despite the display of outrage, witnesses said that many of the protesters were government employees ordered to demonstrate, and that aside from a large gathering outside the presidential palace, most of Khartoum was quiet.

This was an orchestrated event by the Sudanese govt, for political and PR purposes.

The Sudanese govt has been under pressure by the West due to the atrocities in Darfur, which is the western province of Sudan. The govt is behind most of the killing, through the Janjaweed militia, as an attempt to cleanse Sudan of its black ethnic villages. As such, the Sudanese govt has obstructed relief and humanitarian efforts, has not cooperated with the African Union peacekeeping force, and is trying to block the United Nations from sending a larger peacekeeping force.

Since the Sudanese govt is trying to keep Western countries and the UN from interfering with the atrocities in Darfur, it is therefore in the Sudanese govt's interest to stir up its own population against the West, and to get some "leverage" against the UN. Using this incident to convict the British teacher and put on a staged demonstration is a political maneuver of the Sudanese govt.

It has nothing really to do with "radical religious extremists", Muslim fanatics, etc. Think of it like when Bush gives a speech calling some country an axis of evil and freezes its financial assets. The Sudanese govt is "freezing" this British teacher, and making its "speech" through this staged demonstration.

Unfortunately, the US mass media doesn't bother to think, and neither do most of their readers/viewers. it is easier to froth on about savage Muslim crazies.
