eathor with stock turbo ecu or megasquirt control unlike the P cars volvo turbos are eazy to swap on a normal car and will live up to about 300hp if done right they can make 400+ but will not live very long the 240 is light and can be had with a stick T5 or getrags are also swaped in if you want more power |
I have this Volvo sitting in my back yard right now. I could check with the owner and see if it's for sale.

Sweet! I bet it's a turbo!

Found a '93 9000 Aero in Denver for $2600. It has 220k on it, but looks to be nearly perfect condition (owned by a detailer). The car was purchased new by the current owner's father, so it's been in one family. I'm waiting on maintenance/repair info, but it looks good.

That video is great. . .
"Who needs nicotine". LOL! "It's supposed to be more comfortable, but more comfortable than what? Being stabbed?" That thing looks like a total blast. |

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1196615063.jpg Good, solid car... but after driving a turbocharged Porsche exclusively for about 6 months, it feels a little, um, sluggish. |
Thought I should update this thread, I picked up a '93 Saab 9000 Aero several months ago. One family owned since new, overall pretty great condition, full records. 224k, but I only paid $2200 for it. Hasn't yet burned a drop of oil, gets 30 MPG on the highway. Everything works except the heated seats, which is normal for Saabs. Carpet is literally like new, as are the back seats. Front passenger seat is in great shape, driver's seat is solid, but the previous owner's rather large arse has done a number on the padding. Aero front seats, for those that don't know, are factory Recaros, very similar to the E36 M3 Vader seats. Excellent support.
When I picked it up it was stuck in base boost, now with the addition of a manual boost controller that is no longer a problem. Not much lag, plenty of torque steer, but it goes like hell. Reminds me of my 951 with less lag. Much of the torque steer is thanks to shot tie rods, and totally factory 224k suspension/bushings. That will be remedied soon. Overall it's a lot of fun, gets good MPG, and can haul a bunch of stuff. I recently carried home an entire central vac system, including 70 ft of pipe, and only had to put down one of the back seats. Who the hell needs an SUV? The truck situation was fixed with the purchase of a folding 4x8 utility trailer from China tools (Harbor Freight). Just a bit over $200, I can stand it up in the corner, and haul up to 1200 lbs of whatever. Added an OE receiver hitch to my wife's SRX, at 75 MPH you can't even tell it's back there. Overall a great compromise, I don't miss my truck. |
Any pics?
Stuck on base boost? Check magnet-valve that controlls boost. Find it on a junkyard and you won't need you MBC anymore and ECU will be able to controll the boost depending on fuel quality. It's a three-pronged thingie that has hoses going to intake, turbo compressor and wastegate. Check it's contact, check if it clicks and replace otherwise. I'll say this again: Do not MBC a Trionic car! Chip it! MBC will do good on 99% of turbocharged cars but this is not the one. ECU will wind back ignition advance on indivudual cylinder depending on ping detected. If that doesn't work, it will wind back the boost. If you introduce MBC, boost control is out of the loop. It only takes a trailer, one hot day and bad batch of gasoline to mess up the engine. OEM EGT is 920 deg. C on original map and it will boost upwards 1.2 bar on hot day stock. It lives on a edge of knock by default. If you want more power than stock 225hp, try to find a cheap tuner, send him your ECU and ask for a chip. Yes, it costs more than MBC but it's worth it. Aero is somewhat of collectors car and deserves to be kept original or at least be tuned by proper means and not MBC. My 2c. P.S. You picked up best SAAB ever made. |
Speaking of Sweedish cars....I just traded my 06 Lexus GS300 in for an 08 Volvo XC70 (straight 6 carried over from the S80). Definitely not fast, but a really well-done car. You can tell they've been doing this for a while. Very clean, tasteful and nicely executed interior. Smooth ride without the numbness of the Lexus. Plenty of room for my son's RC airplane stuff too. Looked at the BMW 3 series wagons for the same price but couldn't get past the ugly-factor. Chris Bangle should be shot!

Goran, I agree with you in theory, the stock Trionic system is very good. I plan on getting an ECU in the near future, but there are more pressing issues right now. The MBC is tuned very conservatively, far less so than most who post on the various Saab boards. The base boost issue was due to a bad BPC, I will have to replace it prior to upgrading the ECU.
I do enjoy the car, far more so than my '97 900SE. I'm looking forward to restoring the suspension, I expect it will make a dramatic difference in handling. Also looking to potentially upgrade the sway bars in the near future (SAS), many people report that it greatly reduces body roll and makes the car feel neutral. Sadly, no pics. Or weather has been crap here recently, and too cold for a wash. It's Imola Red over the obligatory black interior, with good overall gloss. It has a clear hood/fender protector installed, so no rock chips. The Aero wheel lips need refinished, but otherwise it's a great looking car. |
Matt, sounds like a REALLY nice buy! Now you have TWO GM vehicles.
|
Hey now! I still have the Swedish Saab, before GM had a controlling share in the company. Damn thing feels like it was hewn from granite, no rattles with 224k on it.
To give GM credit, they are finally going the right direction with Saab. Saabaru (9-2) was a huge mistake, as was the SaabBlazer (9-7). Letting them do their own thing, even with a shared GM platform, that's the right idea. The limited edition Saab Turbo-X is a sweet car, and the XWD system promises to cure the torque steer that has always plagued their cars. |
I had a couple 9000 Aeros of the previous generation, and one 900. Great cars. I'm jealous.
|
You can find perfect ones for $5k or less, that's hard to turn down. Based on the experiences of others, I figure mine should be good for at least 300k.
