Alzheimers

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/7123460.stm .

A man shot his wife suffering from Alzheimers. I hope that if I ever find myself in her situation, my husband has the courage to act, hopefully in a way that does not get him into trouble. Living as a virtual vegetable is not life.

Issy,
My Dad went through this hideous illness with my Mom. He didn't take her life but there were times he knew she was suffering and he did prey for God to end her pain with mercy. He finally did. Aweful way to go - if there coukld ever be dignity in death this sort of death had no dignity.

Alzheimer's - a good case for euthanasia. It is a disease from which there is no recovery - just delay of the inevitable. The only ones making anything profitable from this disease is the health care system. Meanwhile, the victim and family suffer.

30 years ago most people died quickly and relatively painlessly from heart attacks.

Now most people die a prolonged, painful death over a few years from cancer.

If we cure cancer, what will be the next big cause of death? Alzheimer's? Slowly losing your mind over decades...

I hope a heart attack gets me.

My mother has alzheimer's, diagnosed two years ago. She still lives by herself and we check on her several times a day. We are not ready to put her down.

That's as it should be Peppy. But for yourself. Would there be a point that you would say: enough, when I fall to this level I WANT IT TO BE OVER, and you would want the plug pulled? For your sake and for your loved ones. I know my choice - quick and painless and with what dignity I could muster.

My dad suffers from Alzheimers and Dementia. It is heartbreaking to see someone who was always a big, tough guy and voice of wisdom, reduced down to nothing.

My father-in-law , who was a survivor of a WWII POW camp in Austria, an accomplished and profitable self taught painter, and who rose from being a mechanical draftsman to the vice presidency of a major Engineering and Construction firm developed Alzheimer's.

At one point I was sitting in the living room with him and he was verbalizing all these seemingly random things that made no sense. He had a bunch of physical twitches and things...then right in the middle of this his body suddenly relaxed, the twitches disappeared and he said, "...of course I'm not the man I used to be but....". He became silent for about 10-15 seconds...and then he began to twitch again and restarted with the random verbalizations.

Since then I have felt, perhaps wrongly, that he was "still in there" if you know what I mean? His real self was not gone, but was sort of overlayed with the disease. It makes me wonder if on some level they don't know EXACTLY what is happening to them. How horrible to be trapped within your own body.

I wish for God's mercy and for peace to all those who suffer this horrible disease and to those who care for them, Dan

I think that perfectly describes the early stages of the disease. Later on, unfortunately, the real person fades and all that is left is the "overlay". It's like in grade school when you would paper mache a balloon, then the balloon deflated over the weekend but the paper mache shell still remained...
