Pictures of your toys inviting thieves?

I see another Pelican, Psportovalance, had his 911 stolen. I hope you find her soon and in good condition. The bastards should be shot where they stand!!

This got me to thinking about us posting pictures of our garages and the toys in them.
I can imagine it wouldn't be difficult for thieves to just look on posts for who has what to steal. I don't have anything of value but some of you guys have many cars, bikes, boats and what not.

I hate to be party pooper but maybe we should be more vigilent in covering addresses and license plates when posting pictures?

I should accompany all pics of my toys with pics of my neighbors (a few cops, and a few deer hunters)...

I am really NOT worried about anyone stealing something from my garage.

im not sure why people cover their plates in pics, when the public can see them when you are driving. i think it is very hard to get info from the dmv with just a plate #.

There's a difference. When you are driving down the street, the odds of running into someone who is looking for an old 911 to steal is low.

Someone looking for one to steal isn't going to go driving around randomly to find one. What are they going to do? Come to a site like this and look to their heart's content!

It's only hard to get info from the DMV from a plate number if you are not willing to lie/perjure yourself. Most criminals aren't worried about that.

The one that was stolen was particularly easy for a potential thief. The owner not only posted pictures, but his work address is in his signature.

There were a lot of pics of that car posted (it's a nice car!). I wouldn't be surprised at all if the thief first saw the car on the Internet somewhere, maybe even here.

i guess what you are saying is true. but if he drove and parked that car in the same area regularly some thief was taking notice.

Paul,

If they really wanted that car, its in Turkey and bet I could find it in a week if the money was good enough.

Wayne,

Agree with your feeling and thats a reason why I do not put photos of any of my valuables on the internet. Watches, tools, spoons, camera's, historic autograph's and so on that I value very much might be discussed a bit on the internet but I do not feel that its a good idea to put a photo of all of this stuff out there on the open.

Doing something like this invites someone who is less than honest to look into finding where the stuff is and take it. Between the bank safety deposit box and a safe or three hidden in the house, which is alarmed, I am not very concerned but then again very few people know that there is anything of value there. Even at that there are a lot of things that are valuable only to me but IMHO no reason to advertise.

This is silly. Thieves are opportunists that drive around looking for an open garage or a house that looks vacant. The most certainly aren't going to spend the time to research an internet bbs where most of you don't use your name and couldn't easily be located. If a thief is going to spend that amount of time stalking prey, they most certainly aren't going after our old ratty ass, oil dripping, easily identifiable cars. And I'll never understand why people disguise their plates in photos. Thousands of people every day see your plates when you drive. Paranoia is not pretty.

In Ontario, with a plate # you can get the name of the person who owns the plate and then just look them up, assuming they're in the phone book, or some kind of directory. All legit, legal, and you can do it at automated kiosks in most malls, though I think you'd have to use a credit card, so you would leave a trace (assuming the card isn't stolen).

Love the internet ...but I too sometimes ponder the "free" information so generously/innocently posted here.

Names, addresses, listing of guns, tools, motorcycles, cars, art, valuables, (spoons?) children's/wives names and sometimes photos of same???

With the above info., a phone directory for your zip code, an on-line map printed out ...I can drive to your home!

Be careful out there.

There are certain pieces of information I am careful never to post online. I trust (most of) you guys. I don't trust Google, I don't trust lurkers, and I don't trust the occasional scammers we get here.

Actually there was a car thief trolling rennlist about a year ago. He went by the handle "turby" and stole another listers' car (Rolex NJ) based upon info he gleaned from posts. It was a one of a kind modded 951. Turby and his meth-GF did end up getting busted and they found Rolexs' car which was mostly parted. In addtiton he ahd many other 944/951 cars/parts and a Ferrari Challenge which he found trolling another board, so yes, it can happen.

I worry about the nuke plant close by, I worry about water supply, I worry about Hillary getting elected, but I don't worry about someone comming to my house and stealing a car. In the parking lot of the mall or grocery store maybe, but not around the house.
