Winter Opera-not real, not porsche

Caught up in watching Cool Hand Luke sing Plastic Jesus over on RL and one thing leads to another and stumbled on this diddy. OT maybe but pretty cool. Second time you watch it the Better Half is going to come see what the heck you're doing on the computer....:)

Enlighten this 'geezer' please.

GPL movies? What are they? What purpose do they serve? Are these shots from a movie or game? Used to 'sell' ones abilities to a company (ie: resume) when job hunting? Or just another exercise with computers as in: I'll do it because I can?

If so ... someone has way too much time on their hands.

Cool Hand Luke is my favorite movie.

I'd like to know the path that led you from that, to this.

Cool vid, I liked it.

GPL grand prix legends is a SIM not a game based on 67 F-1 cars

the record/review function allows you to make this kind of movie

GPL was made in 1999 but has been updated by it's fans

with about 500 tracks and new seasons 65-66- 68
and is still the best driving SIM for F-1 cars

one of the great things about the GPL people is
they give away their work
new car up dates new tracks and other mods
all are free downloads
as is racing on line

so yes it is because they can and DO

You've never experienced Grand Prix Legends have you?

I know this because, if you had, you'd still be trying to beat your own lap time around the Nurburgring in a Lotus 49...:D

Think I get it now. It's a online racing game simulating open wheel cars.

So all the 'break dance', 'hip hop' car gyrations (shown) with music ...are people playing with the 'open architecture' software?

No ...never experienced it.

A few years back the wife did get me, Need for Speed Most Wanted - Black Edition. Still can't get past Third Place on the Blacklist! Grrrrrr.... Damn cops!

Exactly. But not just 'a' racing simulator, many would argue 'the' racing simulator.
The bouncing is probably from the "Shift-R" used to reset the car after a shunt. The car drops down onto the track if I remember correctly. The spins are genuine. Too much throttle in the corner and the car is going to spin and probably not stop until it hits something solid. This is not like a game, you can't get away with things on here that you can on a Playstation for example. The physics model is very realistic and is probably the reason that this never caught on as a mainstream 'game' - it's too bloody difficult for a kid to pick this up and finish one lap without spinning or stuffing the car into a tree. They quickly get bored with that.
Beware though, it can be a trap. The software is probably free to download, even if you find the CD in the store it will cost next to nothing. But the problem has only just started. If you really want to drive properly you will need a steeering wheel and pedals to make it anything like respectable. Then, once you've started you can't put it down. You will be up at 3am desperately trying to perfect the line through Beckets and Chapel at Silverstone, or leave the braking a little bit later coming down the back straight into Inner Loop at Watkins Glen.
When you can run 30 or so laps consistently at a decent pace try racing other cars. It's like starting all over again.
I would recommend this If you have a lot of time to spare, it is a fantastic simulator but incredibly addictive.
BE WARNED!

God, it's been awhile since I've played GPL, but what a fantastic game. Many was the night my roommate and I raced the ring on our LAN at home. Unbelievably realistic and difficult!

If you haven't tried it, grab it from a bargain bin somewhere, buy a force feedback wheel, download some updates, and prepare to get divorced!

The original 8+ mile Spa course is on the sim also. Awesomely fast course!
