Blood Diamond-The Movie, Have you seen it?

I thought it was very good. I thought Leonardo D'Caprio did a very credible job.

Havent seen it yet, but that DiCaprio has turned into a pretty damned good actor... also he has a knack for choosing good scripts and roles.

Except for the genius who cast him as Howard Hughes, which was a total waste of film footage...

He is getting better and will turn out to be a good actor, but after the Hughes role wish he choose them more wisely.

My favorite actor has got to be Johnny Dep.

He's a genius at picking roles. Not afraid to take a risk. Has great instincts.

He is in a league of his own right now.

This is really surprising, in the promo clips I've seen DiCaprio's accent was embarrassingly bad.

Smart too, for Pirates 2&3 he negotiated 25% of first dollar GROSS! for all movie and promotional deals. P2 did over $1 Billion at the box office so far and old Johnny gets $250 million off of that, plus DVD, toys, etc. By the time P3 has run its course, he'll get in the neighborhood of $1 billion personally from those two movies.

Overall liked the movie...but really didn't care for the end. Seemed a bit like a "self-licking" ice cream cone.

True, in a way...but I cant fault his acting in the movie.
He was nothing like the real Hughes....didnt look like him, wasnt tall enough... not even close... but I took the movie for what it was, which was a grandios Hollywood exaggerated fairy tale look at a mans life... i mean, the chick that played Hepburn wasnt even close...but the Ava Gardner chick (Kate Beckinsale) looked very similar to the real Ava, but was an innacurate portrayal of the true relationship which is that Gardner despised Hughes, or so she said.

Finally got around to seeing this movie.
The most violent thing I've ever watched, and disturbing. Reinforced my attitude that the human race is basically a plague and evil.

Question, how much of that violence is real, and how much is hollyweird?

Slow day, Sam?

Fishing in the pond of historical threads.

I did not recall it to be that violent though.

I saw the movie last night and was going to comment, but before I did that I did a search and found there was already a thread on it. So I commented in it

What i found most disturbing was how the rebels killed everythnig that moved for no reason.
I'm used to seeing military forces killing each other in movies but seeing them shooting into crowds killing people for no reason bothered me, especially when it was supposed ot be a true story based at least partly on facts.
I could see no motivation except that they liked killing. It was a portayal of the dark side of human nature that I hate.

I agree on the violence. I think my bad memory clouded my previous judgment.

Even more than they portrayed. Rebels fighting governments, or fighting other rebels, must resort to drastic tactics. While those tactics are unpalatable to most Americans, they are now commonplace in many countries. "Oppose us and we will kill you, your family, and your village." Many men are brave when faced with their own mortality. Few are brave when they know everyone they love will be slaughtered because of their decisions.

As for the concept of "blood diamonds", the diamonds and the conflicts they fund are alive and well.
Sierra Leone
Rwanda
Angola
Zimbabwe
All have suffered. All will continue to suffer.

The World Diamond Council is a "made up" group... formed by the diamond industry itself to impose the Kimberly Process, which they also made up.

The WDC states that the Kimberly Process assures that 99% of all diamonds are "conflict free", but what few end consumers realize is what the Kimberly Process was launched under the narrow definition that “conflict diamonds” only originate from conflicts between ‘rebels’ and ‘governments’, and from smuggling by militias antagonistic to ‘legitimate’ member governments. When a "recognized" government is is in control of the production, regardless of the tactics used, the product is not a "blood diamond".
