Wow - I had no idea how complex of an issue this was. Thanks for all the info!

For some newer receivers it has actually gotten much easier. They have their own microphone that is used instead of SPL meter and pretty much self-calibrate with the push of a button. Takes all the fun out of it. ;)

Yeah - mine came with just such a mike. It worked out well for calibration to the room etc.
