Posts: 12,067 The Edge Of Madness

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is a cautionary tale of Rock N Roll. Once upon a time 5 lads from Britain formed a Rock N Roll band and hit the road. Before you knew it they became rich and famous as the Bad Boys of Rock N Roll.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DiAev...eature=related

After awhile all that fame and fortune began to take its toll on the band. With all their sex, drugs, arrests and far away places they began to believe that they were the Baddest Boys around. It was about this time that one of the lads began having a hard time maintaining and this added further fuel to the whirlwind of madness surrounding the band. These lads now felt they were the REAL DEAL Rock N Roll Bad A$$es. So they decided to put on a Rock N Roll Circus.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e-WSu3QyRU4#

It was about this time that the lad who was having a hard time couldn't keep up with the band anymore, so he was dropped like a rock and soon died. The band with their new replacment decided to take the show on the road to America. They were so successfull that they soon became known as the Greatest Rock N Roll Band ever.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tOBFQ...eature=related

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M1VZW...eature=related

As the Greatest Rock N Roll tour ever was winding down the gratefull band decided to put on a free show at Altamont Raceway in California. Being the Baddest Boys around they decided that they would hire another group of Bad Boy Bikers known as the Hells Angels to provide security. It was a match made in heaven they felt. However this is where Reality hit the pavment and the ***** hit the fan. It was here the band found out first hand that they were not the Bad A$$es they thought they were cause the band found out the Hells Angels were the REAL Bad Men.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZviRY...eature=related

It was here that the Hells Angel killed someone in the audience, right in front of the band. This shook the band into realizing that they weren't Bad A$$es after all but just a bunch of show business entertainers who were playing at being Bad Boys. Never again would they play with such ferocity or meaning. From now on end they would only be going through the motions...

I'll go one further. They haven't done anything good since Brian Jones died.

They basically haven't had any new ideas since then. Neither Jagger nor Richards on their own has an imagination. They need someone with vision to play off of to create that creative spark. Dylan once told Jagger, that he Dylan could write Satisfaction but Jagger couldn't write Like a Rolling Stone.

The period of the RS's career that I like was the Beggars Banquet, Let it Bleed into the Sticky Fingers epoch. Much of the music reflects the disintegration and accompanying chaos of Brian Jones life. Thats where Gimme Shelter, Jumpin Jack Flash, Sympathy, Midnight Rambler, Stray Cat, Honky Tonk, Monkey Man and Can't Always Get, Loving Cup, Memo From Turner come from.

I seem to relish chaos and the edge, as so much of my life was spent there, I understand it very well.

For a bit of trivia...Didja know that Mary Clayton as a result of her vocal performance on Gimme Shelter had a miscarriage.

Interesting perspective. That era is also my favorite, with Exile being my all time fav, but BB and LIB are way up there on the list too. However, imo Brian's contributions were greatly diminished by BB and virtually negligable by LIB (Keith's finest hour) and then he was gone. I actually liked the Mick Taylor era best of all...love the guitar interplay between him and Keith (who imo has ALWAYS been the driver of the band with his rythm guitar), but he has always needed someone to "play off of" (Brian, Mick, and then Ronnie). All of them are technically better guitarists than KR, but imo he is a "musician's musician", and defines the core sound...(well, except when he totally "junkied out" and Mick had more input into the music (re "Miss You", "Emotional Rescue", etc.). "Some Girls" (another top five Stones album for me) marked Keith's return imo, "Tattoo You" (another good one), and '94s "Voodoo Lounge" is actually very good (no hits, but who cares) too...it reminds me very much of the early 70s stuff with the guitar interplay. OK, lemme have it...whatcha think?

Well Get Yer Ya YA's Out is the best LIVE album ever. Mick T and Mr K playing are absolutely HOT HOT HOT. But most of the material that they burned on was written earlier on BB, LIB and Stickey. The first real time Mick T and Mr K trotted out their stuff was the Hyde Park Concert 7 days after Brian went horizontal forever. There is a 19 minute version of Sympathy at HYde park where you can see them learn to creat that sound.

Richards has a vision in his head of what he wants the sound to be, but needs the inspiration of a Brian to put it into drive. Mr K has always said, "I play a bad guitar." But what he lacks in technical prowness he makes up in vision. The Wood man has always been a Mr K wanabe, so ole Mr K has been starin at himself in the mirror since 75.

Exile was RNR lite. Not much in the way of ferocity, that Sympathy or the others mentioned had. When ya listen to Gimme Shelter you feel your on the edge of the abyss. When ya listen to All Down the Line or Rip This Joint or Happy it just a well oiled machine makin sound. Some of the material on Exile was allready in the vaults because it didn't make the cut before. Like Lovin Cup...

I concur with "Ya Yas" (the Stones at their very best: live & raunchy ), but Sticky was actually laid down a couple of years later. I know it's a "personal preference" thing, but Exile is "it" for me (and many other hard core Stones fans I've known over the years). I don't do large venue shows much anymore, but took the g/f to see the boyz a couple of years ago to a stadium show at Duke U. My g/f hadn't seen them since '69 in a ballroom in Detroit...we had a great time, and on any given night, they can still "bring it" when they want to!

ps: Although Brian died right before the Hyde Park show, from what I understand, his contributions had been virtually nil for quite some time before that.
