Why are the anti-sports people in Pelican OT so vocal?

It's a weird phenomena.

You can post something about, say, the Civil War, and you'll get a bunch of people with knowledge posting.

But you WON'T get someone posting "Ah, who cares about the Civil War!"

Of course, not everyone is interested in the Civil War, but those that aren't just don't click on the thread, or post in the thread.

Civil War is just an example, the subject could be just about anything, bird watching, stamp collecting, whatever.

But every time there is any discussion about sports, numerous people, invariably feel the need to post "I don't like watching sports," or "who cares about ____ (fill in the blank, baseball, football, etc.)."

What makes people feel the need to make such a public proclamation? Theories?

I wouldn't watch a sports game on tv if you paid me to, but I might go to a game if you paid me to, paid for parking and beer. I just skip over the sports threads on Pelican (this one excepted).

I don´t recognize that phenomena. But then I don´t read the sports threads.

Might it be that us sports ignorants subconsciously feel inferior/non masculine and hence need to bash sports extra much. Something like the classic cliche about latent homosexuals being the most extrovert homo-phobics..

I have to agree. It is a strange phenom that folks who have no interest in the subject feel compelled to click on the thread and then take the time to say they have no interest or the subject is beneath thier consideration. "I'm too busy to watch sports, but I have the time to post on threads about how much I dislike sports"

Not just PPOT, but they are every where, I'm not a hockey fan, but I don't whine about hockey posting either. The ones who cry are typically the ones who were picked last for kick ball

Maybe they want you to do the same? Maybe it's your wife, and she wants you to turn off the TV and take out the damn garbage?

A couple of times, I have voiced my disdain for professional baseball and basketball anymore although I used to be a BIG fan of both. I'm just disgusted with what they've done to the "sports" I loved while growing up. I'm still hanging on to the NFL unless they let Vick back in or the Panthers don't improve

KC, how long will Carr last in Carolina? Is the honeymoon over? I bet a friend that he will be out of football in 3 years.

It seems most of the anti sports post are from people who don't like hyper rich, hyper spoiled, hyper stupid, antics of the professional athletes.

That brings up the point of why do we care? Why do pro athletes (or rock stars, or actors) always have to be "roll models"?

If someone wanted to pay me a billion dollars a week to dance the hokey pokey in a pirate costume for five minutes every Wednesday afternoon during lunch I would take the money.

To be honest, I haven't had the stomach to watch much lately . I'll give Carr the benefit of a doubt in that he hasn't been 100% healthy (hard to do anything with a back injury), but he's gone... He's been totally ineffective, and has absolutely no "connection" with Steve Smith (one of the best receivers in the game imo). All the other QBs come in and "magic" happens with Smith, but with Carr it's more like Voodoo. Can't blame it all on Carr though, the defense has been a big letdown too. And btw, baseball sucks!!!

Both of my daughters are in band, one in college and one in highschool. They both hoped their teams lost at the end of the season so they would not have to play in playoffs or bowl games (both teams advanced much to their dismay). We have had the band kids at our house on numerous occasions and EVERY one of them hates the "popular" kids (football players). I can't help but think this is some kind of nerd vs popular kid thing. When I started going to the local highschool football games a few years ago to watch my daughters in the band, I really started getting into it as their football team won the state championship in '05. My daughters would actually get mad at me if I talked about the games or asked how injured players were doing.

My girls are fairly athletic and while I appreciate all they have done in band, I can't help but think they have been brainwashed into disliking anything to do with team sports.

I wonder if those who you have noticed having disdain for sports here on PPOT, were themselves "bandies"? (So as not to offend anyone, I have nothing but respect for good musicians and wish I had learned to play an instrument as a kid)

I don't get the whole stick and ball thing. Seems so tribal. I'm glad I don't have to discuss this stuff with office-mates on Monday mornings.

Why are the anti-sports people in Pelican OT so vocal?

Simple: there's no "I" in team.

I lived sports growing up...was average at best, but loved the competition nontheless. Tore my ACL at 27 and have been a fading spectator ever since . Unfortunately imo, the negative effects of the BIG money at the pro level has also sifted down to college sports, etc. Those that play the sport for the love of the game (Brett Favre comes to mind) are few and far between, and many are all about the image, money, ego, etc. I don't need it anymore, and can easily understand why someone who "never played the game" just can't relate...
