Damn...Garage broken in to--lost my saws

Pullled in to the garage tonight and my table saw and band saw are gone. ****. They got in thru a window and just helped themselves. Damn. At least the officer was nice. Too bad Farmer wasn't outside...***** damn piss am I upset.

That sucks, look for things you might notice missing right away. Spare house key, spare garage door opener, paperwork. Those are the things more valuable to a thief than tools, eventhough they aren't cheap.

Make sure that they do not have a way to get back into the house a second time. Now that they know how to get in, and could have gotten into the house, they just might come back with a bigger truck and take more. Be proactive on this and make sure it does not happen again.

Did they check for prints or such around the window? Find the perps and put them in jail. Also check the pawn shops and Craigs List around your area for the things. Could help you find the jerks.

Speaking of hiding spare keys in garage. Any suggestions on how to secure a spare key?

I'd like to hide a key to the house in my detached garage, but fear someone finding it and getting into the house. I know finding it would be like finding a needle in the haystack, but still...

if it's just one key and only just in case (not to be regulary used),
simply stick it in the grass/ground somewhere in your garden

it won't run away on it's own
nobody will know it's there, or accidentally find it

and even if they do know it's "somewhere in the garden"
good luck to them on finding it

just make sure it's in the grass, not sticking out , or the magpies will get it

You could put it on a ledge or rafter in the garage no problem, but what works good is to put one in a sandwich bag or two and bury it in a corner of your garden. Put a little rock on top of it or something.

I arrived at a job site in Newport last month to find the doors of the utility/tool trailer wide open. The thieves had just cut the hardened Master padlock and helped themselves to $5k worth of pneumatic guns, Bosch table saw, etc. Luckily all of the Festool stuff, and a lot of other tools were inside the carriage house or it could have been much worse. The guys at the tool store said that I was lucky the bastards just cut the lock, as they have seen cases where the thieves just cut the side of the trailer open with a battery powered sawzall if they couldn't get the door open.

My cousin in Michigan just had his trailer stolen from a job site with about $25k worth of tools inside. His job is at a standstill until he buys everything new while waiting for the insurance settlement, which will be about .25 on the dollar for used tools.

We used really good locks at a jobsite trailer several years ago- They cut the hinges off! Thr door was hanging by the lock.

they said, that pro thieves can find a hidden key easy. for all your spare (car) keys, they highly recommend a securely mounted key box, with a punch button keypad. they said a favorite method of getting all your goods over to the pawn shop, is to use your very own vehicle. i think they also use a key box for the spare house key. that said, my house is ripe for the picking. i only hope i catch them coming or going.
