Overexcited parking valet destroys footballer's Porsche

Paul Hamilos in Madrid
Monday December 17, 2007

When Javier Casquero, a footballer with the Spanish premier league team Getafe, went for dinner at an upmarket restaurant he thought nothing of leaving the keys to his prized Porsche 911 with the valet parking attendant.
Unfortunately, the young valet at Soko restaurant in Madrid wasn't quite so relaxed. Rather than simply park the car, he phoned his friends to boast that he was at the wheel of a Porsche, offering to take them for a spin. He will be regretting that now. After his two friends jumped in, the valet pushed his foot to the floor, seemingly unprepared for the speed of the vehicle.
Losing control, he zigzagged the Porsche along a road near the restaurant, smashing it into six parked cars, including a BMW and a Mercedes.

The hapless driver was slightly injured in the accident, though his friends escaped unhurt. The same cannot be said for Casquero's Porsche, or the cars that it hit as it hurtled along the road.

But the footballer seems to have taken it all in his stride. "These things happen," he said. "That's what insurance is for."

Police contacted the owners of the restaurant and of the six cars that were hit by the valet to discuss insurance claims. Luckily, said Casquero, he was fully covered.

Well, the owner took it well.

Would you hand over the keys to the 959 to a valet? If so, I know what I want to be when I grow up !

I used to be a valet. Never give a prized car to a valet . Pitching 911's and 944's sideways in the garage was fun. Corvettes... not so much.

I almost killed myself in a customers Corvette when I was working at a body shop. I needed to drive the car from Oakland to San Francisco and back to get some brake parts. They had been paving the Bay Bridge and there was a 2 or 3 inch raised asphalt seam. I hit that thing at about 70 MPH. My head hit the roof so hard I was knocked out. When I regained consciousness I had no feeling in both arms. I still don't know why I wasn't paralysed. Apparently I spun all over the bridge but somehow I didn't hit anything. Scary day.

I did a 360 in a girlfriend's Corvette on a crowded freeway many many years ago. I also can't believe I didn't hit anything. This '81 vette was a very scary car and not in a good way.
