Is a nice watch meant to be worn daily?

Is a nice automatic watch meant to be worn on a daily basis or just on special occasions?
Is it mechanically better for the watch to be constantly working or sitting in a case?
does the joy of wearing the watch everyday out way the potential for more dings in the case?

If you had a nice watch would you wear it everyday or just once in a while letting a quartz movement take its place in everyday life?

A fine mechanical watch is like a Porsche. They are rugged and designed to be used daily.

What watch are you talking about?

I am curious as to what kind of watch you are thinking about, I wear an Omega Seamaster automatic everyday, and for me, that's a lot of money for a watch, but remember, there are lots of watches to choose from in the +$100,000 range, and if I ever had one of those, I don't imagine I'd feel comfortable wearing it everyday.

As for the Seamaster, however, she has been as deep as 42 meters underwater, rockclimbing, trekking, sailing, you name it, she seems to be indestructible. Much better that then have her sitting at the bottom of a drawer not working.

The old time I take my Seamaster Pro off is when I work on equipment around the farm.

This is my daily watch. I wear it backpacking, skiing, flyfishing, swimming, even while wrenching on the car. I think I could drive nails with it.

Along the lines of a Rolex or a watch of comparable quality. I am not talking about $100,000 jewel encrusted watches.

I do. I think one of the benefits of a realy quality watch (I wear a Breitling) is it's durability. In particular the crystal is sapphire and after 6 years has NO scratches!

I send mine back to the factory for service about every 5 years. It always comes back like new. I don't know if they are replacing the band, but the scratches are gone and the case is highly polished.

I wear a speedmaster ( omega ) everyday. Although it has an acrylic crystal that gets scratched up, it has a patina all its own. They are made to be worn so do it up. I have a co-axial seamaster for dress that would also make a great daily user, and its an automatic.Check out timezone.com as it is a great website for near new watches and great user forums by brand.

If I did not feel comfortable using my watch every day, I would not have any use for it at all. What is the point of having a watch in a case in a drawer..??

I guess some 'men' use it for jewelry at special occasions, but I am not that kind of 'man'..

I wear an Ollech & Wajs diver watch(a nice, obscure Swiss brand of mechanical watch) that has given continuous service for years. Still looks presentable, a very tough cookie.

Most nice watches are meant to be used; every day.

I do have some formal watches (white gold) that I prefer using on special occassions.

But I use my stainless steel Rolex for everything. Even if I am in jeans or what ever...

I was in the Navy for 9 years, seven of which I wore an Air-King every day of. I'm now a commercial electrician, so I don't wear it to work. I have a couple antiques (a 1950's rolex Zephyr and a 60's Seamaster) that I only wear for special occasions. As long as you aren't working in construction or something like that, a good watch is more than capable of taking daily wear.

FWIW I wore my "James Bond" Omega Seamaster Pro nearly everyday for 10 years and it is still in excellent condition. Lately I have cut-back on the bling factor and typically wear an $80 G-Shock or $150 Luminox and break out one of my Omega's when dressing up.

I wear my Rolex Sea Dweller every day. All things mechanical (Porsches, watches, etc.) work better with regular use!

I wear the gold Rolex everyday. It only comes off when I go to bed or when I wrench.

I do not own a $100K watch. But for people who do, I am sure they would wear it daily. Do you remember the time when your watch is a $5-digital and you said, "Boy, when I get a Rolex I would use it only on special occassion!"...............

You get your Rolex, and..............NOT!

In my opinion there is no difference between not using a watch and not having one at all. To me, saving a watch, or car, or the "good" china makes no sense at all. If you have it but use the cheap stuff because you don't want to risk the good stiuff, why have it at all? You might as well keep your money in the bank and get your kicks keeping track of the interest. That doesn't mean you should abuse your nice things, but using them fully is what they are meant for.

I have two mechanical watches, an Omega Seamaster Pro Chronograph and a Rolex Day-Date. I love wearing them both so it's sometimes difficult to decide which to wear. The Omega is stainless steel and indestructible, so I wear it any time I might do something rough or when I feel like wearing a big sports watch. . The gold Rolex gets worn regularly to work, sometimes when I wear a suit, but just as often as when I'm business casual. By the same token I wear the Omega with a suit when the mood strikes.

One or the other is on me almost always. The gold one has some dings, but they're my dings. The stainless steel one has plenty of scratches on the bracelet and looks the better for it.

Wear your best stuff in good health.

Another vote for the old Rolex.

These things are bulletproof.
