Puppy Love

My old lab passed away last summer...even though I love labs, I really couldn't see getting another one after so many years with Earl.

Here's Hoagy:

He's been here two weeks and has settled in nicely.

Wow that looks very similar to our 1.5 yr old Australian Shepard!

Great dog, but LOVES to chase ANYTHING that moves. We put in an underground fence this past summer and it made life much better .

Ours loves playing fetch, swimming for 30 minutes at a time non-stop in the pond and above all else...playing tug-of-war/keep away with sticks.

Huge condolences for losing your Lab. I lost my 14 year old Lab, Dudley this summer too.

Beautiful puppy and I like his name. I have debated getting a playmate for Sooner, my 4 year old yellow/white Lab but haven't so far. Let us know how they get along. How old is the other dog? What are their sexes?

Dan,

I read your very touching thread about Dudley...I felt exactly the same about Earl.

The other dog is a two-year-old female, spayed, and very active. Hoagy is a male. They had, like most dogs, a very brief butt sniffing phase but quickly settled into mayhem

Here is what you have to look forward to as our 1.5 yr old "Bandit" looked nearly identical to your new pup. He looks fat now, but it is all fur. My daughter had him shaved at the beginning of summer and he went from looking obese to looking anorexic! The whole shaving at the beginning of summer seemed to work out real well with this breed in our climate.

Tim,

Thanks! How short do you crop Bandits coat. I had not considered clipping the dog, mainly because this is the first longer-haired dog I've owned.

It got cut real short! Probably under a 1/4"! I barely recognized him as he looked so skinny....I thought my daughter bought an additional dog!

Here is a pic of him near the end of this past summer in clipped mode (only pic I have of him on this computer showing him after about 2 months after being clipped). The previous pics were taken last night, so obviously the fur all grew back in time for winter. He is an outside dog and seems to like the cold weather.

A friend of mine had a boarder collie and he was a great dog, very active, agile and VERY smart. If I every get into a bigger yard where I could accommodate a dog I would probably go for a Australian Shepard or a boarder collie.

Say Hi to Bandy and Clementine. Both are mixed Aussie/Border Collies and both are great dogs. Congrats on little Hoagie!

Our two lab puppies, Joe and Louie, bolted last night through an open gate, led by our (jealous) Violet. She came back (with a smug grin) but the pups did not. My wife is frantic and I am ticked. Stupid dogs (stupid owners).

Hogie is quite the cutie. He kind of looks like a Burmese Mountain pup.

Burnin: I've had very good luck with the Innotek fence system.

Nice looking dogs Mark! While mine is mainly black with a bit of white, now I see why he has a touch of brown on one rear leg. Do yours also go bezerk chasing anything that moves?

We have some cats living on the back fenced in deck and Bandit killed two of the kittens and one adult last spring when they ventured too far out in the yard while Bandit was within sight of them. He did not draw blood, but rather shook them to death. The remaining cats are very smart about knowing how and when to venture out past Bandit's invisible fence now .

In the summer, Bandit will spend huge amounts of time and energy chasing birds around our property. He especially likes chasing my foam electric slow fly RC airplane. It has tooth marks to prove it!

He also enjoys riding on the ATV, the snowmobile and even the Jet Ski when we had it in the pond for a couple weeks last summer
