I've never been on one, but I've had them come close enough (when fishing Fla. lakes) to know I don't want to either. Those things make enough noise to wake the dead...there's got to be more enjoyable ways to tour the swamp. Although not the Everglades, I've rented small boats (don't recall the hp) to tour the Okefenokee Swamp further north...more freakin' gaters than you can imagine...I'm talkin' hundreds upon hundreds of 'em.

Try the Billie Swamp Safari along Alligator Alley about half way from Naples to Miami. It's a little hokie, but not a bad deal. It is run by the Seminole tribe on their home reservation lands. It is the only one we ever tried, so there may be better ones. The airboat we were on had a monster Lincoln V8 with a very large fan. The operator made sure everyone was wearing ear plugs(included) and life jackets were readily available. Fairly tame, but fun in my estimation.

+1 for Billie Swamp Safari. That's where we take all out-of-town guests. You can ride in an airboat or a "monster-truck" version of a swamp buggy. You WILL see alligators and, afterward, you can eat them in the restaurant. "Hokey" is an understatement, but it is fun! |
