A couple of years back was stationed in England and drove into London for the Christmas holidays. Was going to pick up a family member at Victoria Station and traffic was, as always, heavy. I was looking to pull over to the left but there were two motorcycle cops right on my outside (left) fender. I hesitated, too long it turned out, to pull over and they flipped on their lights, pulled me over and issued a ticket for going TOO SLOW. I was at the posted limit and explained that I was hesitant to cut off cops on cycles and got the response "You are reeking havoc on the traffic behind you. You must pull to the left or speed up." I never thought I would get a ticket for observing the posted limit!!

Interestingly, there's a box you can check to claim that someone else was driving your car, but you have to give their name and driver's license number. Sounds like a convenient loophole to me. My last ticket was early one morning, about a month after I bought my Carrera. I was out in the middle of nowhere in the mountains, doing a little over 100, when I crested a hill and saw a white Ford Explorer coming over a hill in the other direction. I thought "Hmm, that looks like a..." then slammed on my brakes as he flipped on his radar and my V1 lit up. The trooper asked me where I was in such a hurry to get to - like my answer would have made a difference! I considered myself lucky that he only got me for 82 in a 60. |

A friend of my father's enjoyed flogging his 72 S over Highway 17 between Los Gatos and Santa Cruz, CA. If you are not familiar, it has major wide twisties, a few short straights, and you are either going up 'the hill' or down. The posted speed for much of the hill is either 50 or 55 max even though it is 4 lanes because of all the curves and limited sight. Oh, and the hill is pretty well patrolled by the CHP.
So, this guy really was a sports car guy and liked to wring what he could out of his S. One time he decided to go for a record run from LG to SC and was running between 80 and 90 the whole, with 3/4 of the hill dispatched on his way to SC. When coming off the hill at Scotts Valley (read wide open and flat) he decided it was time to back off since he was really exposed - besides the fun was over. He said he was doing a leisurely 65 (60 MPH posted) and kept that speed as he did the final decent into SC when he was lit up. He pulled over and the CHP said that was the fastest and longest chase over the hill he had ever seen and if the Porsche hadn't slowed, he would have had to radio the honors to his buddies in Santa Cruz. The officer then starts chatting the guy up about the 911 and wants to know all about the car. Come to find out the officer is a big fan of 911s and wants to know everything about the car. In the midst of the friendly banter, the CHP tells the guy, "Oh by the way, you are going to sit here for a half-hour while all the people you passed see you sitting here, now show me the engine." The chat continues and the guy gets off with just a warning and a stronger warning that if he ever attempts to do this on his watch, he will be written up for reckless and excessive speed and will go to jail. He then continued chatting until the half hour was over and told him to have a nice day. The guy was absolutely floored. He never attempted to drive that fast over the hill again. |
It happens....
I've gotten about 5 speeding tickets if memory serves me correctly, but the first two were in lesser cars doing lesser speeds. Once I got the 911 however this changed...
The first was in the evening around march '03 heading west on the 8 in San Diego, the sun was below the horizon and all the headlights were on so I couldn't tell that the pair behind me belonged to a lady cop who was pacing me at 85 in the 65. We pulled over and I was trying to figure out a way to talk myself out of it till she got to the window all smiles.... MAN was she hot. All I could do was flirt and she just calmly and politely wrote my ass up. I was going to deploy later that month for eight months to the Arabian gulf for operation Iraqi freedom as well and even that wouldn't stop her. I confess I wasn't concentrating too well on bargaining at the time. With looks like that I doubt she got much of an argument out of anyone. I had to have my legal officer send the court a copy of my deployment orders to get a continuance. The lucky break took place heading north on the 5 through Firebaugh county. I had been cruising over 100 the whole time when I had to double back south for a gas stop and ended up needing to go 10 miles out of my way to get to the next exit to do it. To lessen the loss of time that constituted I took it up a notch and put it at about 130 (estimated). I figured I'd be fine as anyone I'd need to look out for would undoubtedly be ahead of me and the opposite side of the highway was separated by a concrete barrier... except for a length of 100m or so on my way back to the gas stop. Wouldn't you know it, a CHP officer happened to be passing me on the opposite side just as I came to that opening and he turned his lights on across the highway. I figured it pisses cops off when they have to chase you so I slowed it down to 65 and he eventually caught up..."Do you have any idea how fast you were going?" I hazarded the thought that I might just tell him I was going 85 as my '81 speedometer only goes that high, all I could manage was a blank stare. "Well by the time I got around to your side I got you doing 93 but you were going a hell of a lot faster than that weren't you?" - <blank stare>. After I broke out the paperwork he asked me a bit about the car and complimented it. I began to feel a bit better and then he told me something that I'll never forget: "you know... this is my stretch of highway and I patrol here all day. You have no Idea how many times I've come across some poor lady on her roof in a minivan or SUV all dazed and confused and all she can say is 'gee officer all I can remember is getting in behind that Porsche/corvette/Ferrari and thinking, if I can keep pace with this guy I'll make GOOD time'. All these cars out here can't go as fast as you safely. You're not a sports car you're a pace setter. If you speed, you inspire speed. How many times do you remember people getting in behind you while you were blasting down this highway?". I thought for second... sure enough several times, although by the time they got there I was long gone. I genuinely felt bad after that and after he came back with the ticket he leaned his head in and looked at my speedo "well, see'in as how you couldn't possibly have been doing more than 85 I'm writing you for '85+' in the 70. Now keep those speeds down around 80. I know people drive kinda fast through here" Probably the best experience I've had being pulled over. I kept the speeds down for months afterwards on the highways, remembering his words. My final Speeder was for 94 in the 65 in a Taurus SHO (right as the speed limit drops from 70) going down the backside of the grapevine into Valencia... cop was curt and quick... didn't nail me for the 96 I was actually doing as that would have entailed booking me and he just wanted to punch out some revenue for the city that evening. Did traffic school for two of these tickets. -Mike |
I have to say I have never had a speeding ticket "in my 911" However when I was sixteen my dad had an 83 SC targa. My parents went to Hawaii for ten days. Enough said, I found the spare set of keys and proceeded to drive the car while they were gone. One night while returning from my girlfriends quite late I opened it up on Hwy. 16 betwwen Gig Harbor and Purdy. As I got to th Purdy exit there were three WSP cars lit up in a rolling road block. Apprently I had been clocked by radar at 135 in a 55. After that I was dragged from the car, cuffed and taken to Juvenile detention. The arresting state partolman was so pissed at me he forgot to read me my miranda rights. I got off on a technicality, but it was a very expensive lesson for a sixteen year old. I had to pay my attorney fees over $2500. My dad wanted to kill me, and there times over the next six months when I wish he had, it would have been easier. Dad sold the SC very soon after and was "Porscheless" until a few years ago when he bought a 996.
The best Porsche ticket story I 've heard though was from a friend who was "busted" by one of Washington State's new road rage enforcement cars. In WA the state patrol started a new program to catch people committing road rage or reckless driving. These are complete stealth cars of various makes that are equiped with special video units to help with prosecution. The idea is to video the offender from a stealth unit for some time before a stop is made. My friend who has a very nicely built red SC was late to work one day as he got on to Hwy 18, as he cruised around 70 to 75 in a 60 zone passing cars he noticed a nice white Volvo turbo wagon following him move for move. He didn't think much of it and continued for some 17 more miles until he reached I-90. As het got onto I-90 headed west there was no traffic so he opened it up to about 120 and Volvo stayed with him. Suddenly the Volvo lit up like a christmas tree. The officer told him in no uncertain terms that his exploits were all on video. He was issued a reckless driving citation and sent on his way. Since then I have learned about a number of othe stealth cars including a red 930. |
Okay, check this out. Not really my story to tell but I bet its a good one. I visited with my professor's widow today and she gave me two envelopes full of service receipts for Hester. In one of the envelopes was this "Notice to Appear" issued by the California Highway Patrol on October 17, 1976 (before the professor owned it). Check out the speed - 100 in a 55! Damn! :)

After getting relocated to Southside VA I was working lots of hours at the plant so when the opportunity arose I figured I had to takemaximum advantage of it. One Sunday my wife and I decided to take our '84 Carrera Cab for a ride up to the Blue Ridge Parkway. Had a great time but probably drove a bit too quick per the speed limit up there.
Then no the way back I decided to go thru Greensboro and headed off the Parkway and down Rte 421 (I think) toward Greensboro. It's a divided highway with two wide lanes going both ways and a big ravine between them in most places. Traffic was light and good visibility so I got the ole 911 going pretty good. Must have hit 100 in some places. Wife was chirping a bit and sure enough a NC state cop car goes by in the other direction. The chirping increased but I told her that there was no way he could get across the huge ravine. I was so unconcerned that I didn't even speed up. About 30 seconds later I see red lights flashing behind me and by then it's too late to even think about doing something bright like taking off. I have no clue how in the hell he flew across that chasm. He comes up to the car asks for my license and the usual stuff and I ask what's the problem...in my most innocent manner. He responds that I was going nearly twice the speed limit. I said "That's impossible since I never hit the gas all the way down the mountain." he hesitated for just a few seconds and smiled and said "That may be true sir but you sure as heck didn't hit the brakes either." Cracked me up so much that I just laughed and said gimme the ticket! It was not nearly as funny when I found out that because of the speed I had to appear in court at Wilkesboro which was about 90 miles from where we lived in VA. |
On my home from our cottage one Sunday afternoon in August driving my ’79 Targa, I took the main route that is a 2-lane 55 mph highway with two or three passing lanes in a stretch of about 25 miles. Normally I’d take the back roads but for some reason, I decided to stay on the main road and merely take it easy. There didn’t seem to be much traffic and not too many motor homes or other RVs clogging the road.
Sure enough, after about five miles out of town, traffic backs up and there is a line of about 4-5 cars doing about 50 mph being led by a beige Buick being driven by a typical beige Buick couple. No sense in trying to pass until the passing lane comes up in about a mile. Once we hit the mile long passing lane, I’m just about ready to pass the leader when another Buick pulls out to pass the leader Buick – I’m not kidding here – this one going almost 53 mph and blocks me behind him. By the time this guy gets over and I have a clear shot to pass, the passing lane is ending and I’m in a bind – I can’t pull back in because of traffic to the right so I down shift and hit it hard, passing the Buick and of course, a State trooper is in the next lane, sees me accelerate, hits me with radar, and does the U-turn thing with lights flashing. I pull over and when he gets to the car, I ask him, “OK, what was I supposed to do? Run somebody off the road or get out of the way?” His creative answer, “Sir, there is a posted speed limit and you are not permitted to exceed that limit.” I take the ticket for 70 mph in a 55 mph zone and note that the trooper did indicate that the rest of the cars in the line were going under the posted limit of 55. Next day I called the court and asked to speak to the prosecuting attorney. I told him my story and said that I really didn’t want to spend the time and effort to fight the ticket, that the only reason I got pulled over was that I was driving my 911, but that since I hadn’t had a ticket in over ten years I would fight it (I had idea on what grounds). After agreeing to talk to the cop and verify my story, the prosecutor let me plead to a non-moving violation of not signing my registration that carried with it a fine of $90. Moral of the story, NEVER agree to a ticket until you have exhausted all of your other options to deal with it in a less onerous manner. |

I was going home from a job just cruising along and got passed by a black impala. I didnt think anything of it and just figured id cruise along with him and hed get caught first if anything. So sure enough we passed a statie and he gave chace. I slowed to an allowable pace in the slow lane and figured he'd pass and persue the impala but no he came for me. I pulled over and complied as i should. I asked why he didnt pull over the car ahead of me because he was clearly going faster. He replied "Because hes a state police investigator" . Great just my luck. So im sitting there thinking. So why is it safe for an impala to go 86 in a 65 and not a porsche. So when all is said and done my insurance actually went Down $200. So i guess i have nothing to complain about but i definatly feel like i got tricked into the ticket

I always get tickets in my daily drivers mostly beacuse I think they are the P-car. |
Every year for the past 7 or so years I would take a January trip out of the great rainy NW to the deserts of SoCal. My wife would fly to SFO or LAX and we would spend a few days together, she would fly home and I would head to the desert. One year I drove out to Death Valley, via Palm Springs, and 29 Palms and spent the night in the Cabins at Furnace creek. The next morning I got up early and my plan was to drive to around the extraterrestial highway and back to Las Vegas for the night. Well an alternator light issue changed that plan. I e-mailed this board for suggestions about whether I could make it to Vegas on a full charge, about an hour or 2 driving. I stopped at the gas station there and had the battery charged, talked with the rangers about my attempting to get to Las Vegas and a mechanic. Then called the dealer there and they said they didn't think I could make it. I had my AAA card and some water, what more did I need. I was going to give it my best shot. Off I went. I hauled ass to Death Valley junction and when I turned left to head to Beatty and Vegas, the road was an arrow. I stopped, revved my motor and just eased into 140+. I also had the V-1 off to save juice. Wayyy up ahead coming down out of the hills I saw a vehicle coming from the other direction. It was about 9-10 in the am and I had only seen one other vehicle, a camper, about 15 minutes earlier. When he finally came out of the hills and was on the straight that I was on, I started slowing. I didn't want to pass him going that fast so I started slowing. First to about 110 then to about 80. When he started getting to get where I could tell it was a car I flipped on the V1. Then all of a sudden I thought, Sh%t that looks like a CH.... never finished the thought. My V1 went crazy, I let off the throttle and my heart just sunk. I then saw him stick his arm out of his window and give me the universal, " slow your ass down" arm wave. I continued to slow to 55 and I kept an eye on him in my mirror, expecting him to turn around but he didn't. He gave me a couple of instant ons but he kept going. The worst part was now traveling 55 after doing almost 3 times that. I was thinking I could just open my door and use my foot to push us along. Kept thinking that the black helicopters were watching me all the way to Las Vegas. Anyway, I made it to town, had a great time and had a new alternator installed overnight. Then off I went in the morning, thought still paranoid of my near miss.

was driving back from Rotterdam to Ypres(Belgium), in my just recently bought 944S, 6 o'clock saturday morning, not much traffic, and figured i was going to see how fast it went...
Absolutely clear road, flat tarmac, and no room for hidden speed camera's... so confidence was high, and i floored it Car was rock solid, no funny noises, no vibrations of any sorts and at 240kph (speedlimit was 120kph) the objects in that big windowy thing up front start to move about pretty fast... then i noticed a car up ahead with something on it's roof, looked like a fully loaded roofrack and i figured, can't be the police, they have these light boxes on top.. to hell with it just half a second later i'm wizzing past the car, and notice "Police" on the side TIMMAAAAY! figured it would be no use to slow down to give them time to ponder over my rather blatant disrespect for speed and their authority, so kept up the pace, drove to my uncles place where i was staying for the weekend, and that would be it never got a ticket for that one, but all weekend as i was driving through town, with my Dutch numberplates, i had the pleasure of a Police escort, every time i ran in to them... they simply followed me around.. guess they wanted to convey the message of "we know what you did saturday morning" :D |
I never had and exciting ticket, they were all pretty un-exciting, but I did have a pretty good near miss once.
I was just about to sell my 911, but a guy that I work with who's a gearhead had never ridden in it. I drove him to lunch one day. I took a left turn down a wide flat 4 lane road that has a center turn lane. When I turned I ran it up through the gears. I was at about 105 when I passed a group of about 8-10 cars going the other direction. As I passed them, I noticed that boxed in the group on the far outside was a police Chevy Blazer. Well, crap, what to do. I've never run before, and didn't really run that time, but I didn't slow down much either. About 1/4 mile up the road is a long left hand banked curve in the road. So I kept in the throttle. Just before I rounded the curve in the road I saw the cars in the group that had the cop boxed in braking and parting to let the cop turn around. A few seconds later I rounded the corner and ducked into the first parking lot on the left. Actually, I shot into the parking lot. Eventually the other guys that had been trying to follow us to lunch caught up and found us in the parking lot. "I guess we are eating here?" Yeah, I saw a motorcycle cop and a couple of police cars patrolling the road in front of the shopping center while we ate. I was thankful that I was selling the car and never drove to lunch again. I need another 911. |
Just to clear that up. The Porsche in the photo did go through the red light. There is another pic. showing this. I was found not guilty due to the cops not having a good picture of the driver. I did not have to name the driver or even say it was not me. They just put that check box on the ticket form hoping you will name the driver. Your 5th amendment rights clearly keep you from having to turn in another person to save your skin. It's up to them to figure out who was driving and then give them a ticket.
My declaration only stated that the picture was not clear enough to convict on. Great stories, by the way! |

The cameras were only for a trial period and eventually the State legislators did not renew the cameras when the time came. As a Firefighter who responds to numerous calls for idiots running red lights and injuring and killing innocent people I am all for them. Sorry for the rant. |
