Calling all guitarists ...

Guys, my son normally uses "Ultimate Guitar Tabs" for, err, tabs. He tells me that Guitar Pro is better for these, and wants me to get it for him.
I've googled it, but it seems at first glance to be for recording purposes. It also seems to be costly!
Does anyone have any experience of this program?
TIA.

Stephen

I thought guitar prop was a program you can d/l to look at some of the files on Ultimate Guitar tabs. I have yet to d/l though...

Do not pay for TAB. Like porn, there's so much of it for free on the Internet. Since a lot of it is wrong anyway, it's especially bad to pay for it. Best is to learn by ear and use the TAB for the tricky stuff.

Have him try www.chordie.com lots of tabs there.

www.wholenote.com has a good section of tabs at the bottom of the page, the artists are listed by the letter of their name. This is linked to OLGA which the US version is down due to legal reasons but the Polish versions usually still work.

I haven't used Guitar Pro, but Power Tab is pretty good.

And free.

Absolutely don't pay for it...some of that stuff on Ultimate guitar I typed in 10+ years ago when I was in college.

All the tap is free, the guitar pro software (I think) formats the files nicely for you with chord forms and what not.

Best is to learn by ear, but without tab I would have never learned anything. It's a good crutch to get started. But yeah, tons of it's wrong.

Thanks for all the info.
I'll set him straight ... he's 15 and thinks he knows everything! (but I guess we've all been there).

At 15 I DID KNOW EVERYTHING.

Just wish I still did!

My son was using tabcrawler.com many years ago. I used to print if off for him from work as at that time our home printer was on the fritz. Then one day he told me not to print off anymore stuff he didn't need it. tabcrawler is still there too.

With a guy with a name like Les Paul for a dad, I wouldn't think he'd need it at all. ;)

Well, he surpassed my guitar prowess when he was about 10 and by 15 had one of the top 10 pop/rock songs of the John Lennon songwriting contest that year. One thing he did though was take lessons from a number of different guys over the years. I think more to jam than really learn anything but he says all those different guys he took lessons from really helped him in different ways.

Les Paul just comes from a collection of guitars my son and I have. Guitar collecting is a very slippery slope. Kind of like more hp for a 930. When is enough enough? Probably never.

Here was my son on the mobile John Lennon touring bus after a day of recording 3 years ago. Dude in the Pixies shirt.

That is great for your son to start so early Les... I didnt get my first guitar until I was 18 and didnt really start playing it until late in college. It helps to start early.

Here he was at a Woody Guthrie tribute they hold in our local town tearing it up on a strat he has now had for 10 years. Some of the old codgers were somewhat taken aback with his un folkish set but have asked him back every year since. This was also 3 years ago.

I would get your son the Guitar Pro software. You dont have to pay for the tabs, just the program. You go to mysongbook.com to download the tab onto your computer, and Guitar pro runs it. It will give you tabs for vocal, all guitars, bass, drums, etc. They are in midi format, but he can play along with the song, while watching the tabs go by.You can slow the tempo down to get those tricky licks down.

It really is a great learning tool.

Im on my Yamaha O2R96 digital board right now, engineering for my UNLV basketball team (House Audio), but will have time to discuss it later if you would like.

Nathans_Dad 12-30-2007 01:46 AM

i just dowloaded the Power tab software, it works pretty well. The only thing it gives you over just looking at a tab you could print out is that the midi files gives you the rhythm of the song if you've never heard it.

There is a ton of tab out there though (although many of the sites are talking about the music industry asking Congress to declare tabs copyright violation).

So, you are Les Paul, and he plays a Strat.

I too come from a diverse family.
