Nice gas bill.

63 at night--67 daytime. Just got the bill for last month--$245. Yikes! Time to wear another sweater.

Makes my $73 seem paltry by comparison, and December was, for us, a cold month (5 nights at freezing or slightly below)

I live in Calif so I pay closer to that $245/month in the winter, but I have a poorly insulated house with stupid vaulted ceilings. Doesn't hardly even get to freezing here.

Yeah? Now tell us about your air conditioning bill during an Arid-zona August???

I will have to wait until Winter is over to estimate the change, but last year I installed double pane windows. Also, the house is 9" thick solid burnt adobe brick. The walls actually get warm in the daytime and that heat is radiated in overnight.

Mine was $93. I keep it at 70 in the evenings, 65 during the day/when we are asleep. I love my 1600 sq. ft. house.

You might try a constant 65. That's what I'm doing this winter- my bills seem a bit less, but I'm not doing any scientific comparison.

pwd:

My house is cooled by a system called evaporative cooling in which water is evaporated and in so doing cools the air. The windows are left open and because of the low humidity the differential in temp inside and outside can be as much as 35 degrees. So my only costs are for the electricity to run the squirrel fan motor for air and the water that evaporates.

My bills are all automatic deduction since last year, but in 2005 and 2006 my electric bills were as follows:

May 2005 $52.85 2006: $74.32
June 2005 $69.67 2006: $100.96
July 2005 $127.96 2006: $132.57
AUG 2005 $119.03 2006: $121.58
Sept2005 $116.01 2006: $103.44
Oct 2005 $85.93 2006: $82.27
Nov 2005 $50.02 2006: $57.76

I should add that the master bedroom has a separate system with electric heat and A/C and those costs are included in the above.

3500 sq ft house (on geothermal), thermostat at 74F constantly and 2000 sq ft garage on resistance heat at 50F constantly...total electric bill is $178.

The first apartment my wife (then girlfriend) and I shared was the entire bottom floor of a Victorian in Arlington, MA. I would estimate 1400 s.f.

The house was in very good, but original, condition.
Lots of windows, all single pane.
Walls insulated by horse hair.
No insulation between floor and basement.
Steam heat.

We kept the heat at 68 degrees F.

The first (and only) winter we lived there, we had a January which cost us a tad over $600. Ouch!

No, and I don't believe I know who Dean is/was. I did take it several times to a friend's house in Pasadena, Chuck McReynolds (RIP).

Sorry to highjack the gas thread but Dean had some great gatherings at his house. All early motorcycles, some great cars, Jay Leno was always there, the only big name I can remember, Steve Wright, the Emdes', I have to believe you would have known a lot of the people. I used to go with my 1908 Thor Twin. It came from the Ekins collection. I got it running after he had it for 40 or so years. I think Dean died around 15 years ago. Some of your friends should know him.

About the gas bill, my wife says ours was around $50 until this month. We never turn the air on so it doesn't count.
Had to throw that in to keep with this thread.

You should have to use LP. Just filled up 290 gal. and that wont make it through the winter if it is cold.
