Taxes, Taxes & MORE Taxes

OK... The Kali-forn I-A thread got me riled up. What taxes that you pay seem over the top to you in your state. I'll start here...
Everyone pays property taxes some states more than others. Here in the "We don't even Kiss you First state" property taxes are fairly high. Here's what gets me... When you SELL property you are taxed .5% to the state & .5% to the city. It's not a capital gains tax, it's the selling price.
What are others?, (that you even know you're paying!!! How many taxes do you pay daily?

I live in the dead-center middle of Illinois. To the North and East of me is what I refer to as the giant sucking noise. That's where all of my tax dollars go.

The CTA and RTA have a budget shortfall, and they expect ME, who does not use their services--let alone live in an area that CAN use their services, to foot the bill.

No matter how many taxes you may list, you are still a 'Virgin Island' compared to Sweden. I am waiting for our government to start taxing the air I am breathing..

Yes the same applies to the state of New York. Upstate and western NY is part of the most beautiful areas in the United States. Their sucking sound is a vortex straight south to NYC.

Marcus, Actually that's funny. I run, (blubber control), and I joke about using more oxygen than the average person and say if the state knew I'd have an air tax.

The states are the real killer. They keep raising the property tax. Watch out for reassessment. That's their weapon. They blindside you.

Not exactly. The sucking sound up-state is people moving away and the economy collapsing.

Are all those property taxes, income taxes and sales taxes going to New York City? The answer is no. Not at all. The reverse is true - the downstate counties including Long Island and Westchester are paying bills all over the state.. Are taxes going to fund unfunded mandates by the downstate controlled State government? Yes.

The amount of welfare, over funded schools and public health expenditures up-state is amazing. The problem is - they can't afford it, but are forced to raise the tax monies and spend them.

There is no taxing your way into prosperity - and up-state New York is the poster child for that kind of thinking..

If that's all true I stand corrected, but I'm sure it goes both ways.

VA, while infuriating, probably belongs to the lower tax states. Fairfax City has a 9% sales tax in restaurants, but 5% on everything else. For vehicle sales tax it's only 3%. BUT when you lease a car, you pay that 3% on the entire sticker price of the car, not the portion you are leasing. We also have a very hated personal property tax on cars, which works out to be around 3% of the bluebook value per year. Because of this there is no county or city income tax. State income tax is very modest. Property taxes also irritate the hell out of me, since I don't have any kids and never will in VA, they don't treat roads for snow and my condo assoc. handles garbage service and water. Still, property taxes are about 1/3 of whatmy folks pay in NJ for about the same level of services. DC has a 10% sales for restaurants! Ouch.

Taxes = wealth redistribution!

Reading this just gets my blood boiling. I pay income taxes in VA, but am not allowed to vote there.

Markus had a thread a few months ago about wanting to be a fluffer. Someone had given him the wrong description of that profession...

lotta dem new yorkers coming our way (maryland shore) to escape the outrageous r/e taxes (and real estate prices) they are saddled with.

it's not entirely a bad thing though, we could use a few more trashy blue collar neighborhoods to combat the mcmansion expansion monster. not to mention it's been a boon for the local GM dealership (read Cadillac SUV's and H2's) and jewelry stores.

Unless you make your living in VA, you should not be paying income taxes here. Why do you? There are special forms for part-time residents. If you work in VA and live in NC, do you also pay income taxes to NC? I'm sure there must be some kind of arrangement between bordering states for such situations.

Part of my family lives in Denmark. You would not believe the taxes there but everything is covered by the state. Education, health care, retirement and so on , everything...

My cousin is a surgeon in Kopenhagen and he drives a VW Jetta as its all he can afford after taxes. That said, both of his kids went to college for free and are both now doctors. It has good and bad points...

If they were smart, they'd take their free education and then move to the U.S. to make money...
