Man, I hate it when I have more than 17 e-mails in my inbox.

What filter are you using?

Me? None.

I know our Outlook servers here at work are actively monitored and protected by some home-grown filtering software.

Try Mozilla Thunderbird (same folks that did Firefox). It's got awesome spam filters that adapt to the kinds of spam you personally get, as opposed to preset rules. Within a week or 2 it had cut my spam down from about 25 or 30 a day to 1 or 2.

Congrats - I recently organized and archived about 1,500 e-mails that were just sitting in my "inbox" recently. Thank goodness. Now I'm in "real time mode" with respect to e-mail and can read & file them as they come in.

It's insane how much spam/junk is floating around out there, isn't it? Turn off the spam filter for one day and you'll be stunned at how much crap you get.

I switched to using G-mail for my server - spam is almost non existent.

My Earthlink spam filter is pretty good for personal email. Anyone who's not in my address book gets an automatic bounceback asking them to ask to be added to my address book. Spammers don't bother. And I can view my spam before letting it into my Inbox.

The best spam blockers operate with a 'challenge and response' method, blocking any unrecognized sender until the sender responds to a request. I'm sure the spammers will get around that soon enough.

Mail, the program that comes with OSX, has some incredibly smart algorithms to detect spam and divert it from the inbox.

Unfortunately, I get over 200 business-related emails a day, and about 400 spam messages, since I've had the same email address for nearly 10 years.

I use Outlook at home. The Spam blocker that I use is "Spambayes"

It works pretty darn well. Every once in a while a "new" style of spam will come out. When that happens I'll get several spams, but usually after a day or three it'll learn them and I stop getting them. Very occasionally, I'll get a good email that makes it into my "Spam" folder.

Why do you all think it's spam?

I have 17k items in my inbox and most (99%+) of it is legit. We have very effective spam filtering in our office, so I don't get a lot of crap.

My inbox serves as a communications tracking system. Pair that with X1 or Google desktop search and I can bring up emails on any subject that I have corresponded with people on in seconds. The fact that I use those tools, rather than move things to folders is a choice I've made. However, I do need to archive some of this stuff :)

Not sure I'd be taking organization advice from someone with Kaos in his name!

Thunderbird didn't give me an option to check "leave messages in POP server" option before the first synch. One small oversight that was very annoying. I'm sticking with Outlook for now.

Agree with Thunderbird. At first I thought the spam filter was lousy but it turns out I didn't have it set up right. Once I figured that out it became pretty efficient.

It's still ungodly how I can get a 7:1 ratio of spam/crap to legit. messages though. I'm sure ISPs are pretty pissed about having to constantly increase pipe size only to have it wasted by these jokers.

How much of that is just FYI/CYA junk from your guys and how much is real worthwhile stuff that you will use? I will assume that the SPAM is filtered out.

Two email addresses, one on Yahoo for the online ordering, etc., and one at comcast for the home stuff. No spam at home. Yahoo filters pretty good, and the garbage is on their server.
