But Joe? It can't be about who is better or worse, different eras different players. He was the best in his time...that certain something.

You had to bring up Roman Gabriel - that miserablelousyrottenstinkingcrummyjerkjackassbumba stardetc.

I was having a piano lesson and bawling my eyes out while on the tv in the next room that miserablelousyrottenstinkingcrummyjerkjackassbumba stardetc. was beating my beloved Balt. Colts and Johnny Unitas for in the NFL Championship in 1966 (not sure of the Title or the date - my psychiatrist warned me not to go back and look it up )

Got to admit, Paul IS right again.

Today should help Brady's case;). Let's see - Joe Cool in superbowls 4-0. Brady 3-1.

Mule 02-03-2008 08:03 PM

55-10, Which one did Brady win like that?

JavaBrewer 02-03-2008 08:08 PM

Sorry guys but Football is a TEAM sport. All the truly great teams were deep with talent on both sides of the ball. Taking nothing away from Montana but there were a couple years there were you could insert X as QB and they still had a shot.

Sonic dB 02-03-2008 08:09 PM

when the 49ers beat Cinci in 89, Montana threw one right in the hands of the Cinci defender who dropped it..... pic right in his hands and he dropped it. Now to Montana's credit, he hit Taylor for the TD on the next play...but dont forget that 1 play made the other way and it would have been a different story.

Both QBs were/are great....both made plays and didnt make plays... Joe lost in the playoffs with KC too...
its all relative....both are top 10 QBs all time.

Mule 02-03-2008 08:15 PM

4-0 by 75 points. 3-1 by 9 points. Brady cant carry Joe's jock!

WI wide body 02-03-2008 08:43 PM

It's a tad disingenuous to talk about how good an individual player was and then list team statistics...unless you give much of the credit to the ENTIRE team.

If you want to rate players by wins or titles...same deal.

But if you want to talk about whom was strictly the best player...then you have to go mostly with the statistics.

In the latter case, Montana would probably rank behind both Favre and Marino in the QB ranking.

Mule 02-03-2008 08:58 PM

Yeah, with all those super bowl wins Marino looks great!

Mule 02-03-2008 09:03 PM

4-0, 3 SB MVP's, Joe's a pretender?

Out of 400 people they let get autographs, the SF nighttime news showed clips of 3 of us. I was the only one with a Chiefs jersey on.....it was sweet. I asked him if we (meaning the Chiefs) were going to the SuperBowl. His replied 'Of course...where is it going to be'? Someone in the audience said San Diego, which got a good laugh from him and the others watching the action.

My only visit to Kansas City as an adult (paid for by my employer!) just happened to be the same day that my favorite QB signed his contract with my beloved Chiefs. It was freakin' karma at its best.

Mule, do intentionally ignore facts that are posted or do you simply hope that they go away?

Did you not read or do you have a problem comprehending the "team" results as opposed to individual stats when ranking individual players in a team sport?

You cannot give one player (any player) credit for statistics that are accomplished by no less than 22 players and often more.

Using your criteria for an individual player in a team sport then the greatest NFL player of all time was probably Charles Haley.

Mule 02-03-2008 09:23 PM

How many SB MVP's did he win?

Exactly what part of "team sport" as opposed to individual stats do you not understand?

Charles Haley won more Super Bowl rings than Joe Montana. Does that make him better than Joe Montana?

It's dumb to use the record of a TEAM to pretend that it applies to one person.

One player on a TEAM can take credit mostly for their own individual stats.

You must not have ever played either team or individual sports, right?

I also met Joe at a NASCAR race in Martinsville during the mid '90's. He was the grand marshall or something. He seemed like a really nice down to earth guy but he sure was putting the make on the celebrity gals who were at the race. One of them actually got pissed at him.

I probably should have had him autograph a bunch of stuff but I didn't even think of it at the time.

Mule 02-04-2008 06:31 AM

Joe was REALLY MVP on all 4 SBs. They gave one to Jerry Rice in an effort to be fair. Nobody dominated SBs like Joe.

And unlike the Pats, they didn't have to cheat to win.

gprsh924 02-04-2008 07:32 AM

Mule you make it seem like Brady completed 5 passes and had a bunch of interceptions. Granted, he did not have a great game, but he still drove the patriots down the field in the final 5 minutes and connected with Moss for the go ahead touchdown.

I am not saying he is better than Montana, but you are making it seem as if he is Kyle Boller or Cade McNown.

cmccuist 02-04-2008 07:53 AM

I heard an interview with Joe Montana awhile back and he said he doesn't get any great joy out of winning - because he expects to win every time he takes the field!

That's a very different/unique guy right there. And he's been doing it (winning) since he played at Notre Dame.

After Brady's loss in SB XLII (not his fault, the Giants wouldn't leave him alone), the argument of who's the greatest ever swings back to Joe.
