If you have cable, you probably don't need a new HDTV. The Government is getting rid of the analog OTA (Over The Air) channels.

I own a 20 inch Sanyo that I bought in January, 1991. I don't watch television much, so this is fine.

-I've noticed that large flat screen televisions are now some sort of status symbol. When I visit friends houses here in Fort Lauderdale, everyone has a 40-60 inch flat panel mounted prominently in their living room, the furniture and decorations strategically placed around the screen so as to emphasize it. And I've noticed that when I've hosted parties...people walk into my house and when they see my old TV...they seem to turn up their noses.

Dammit! When they start producing television again [M.A.S.H., Maude, All in the Family, Cheers, Miami Vice, Magnum PI, Gilligan's Island....the Munsters] then I'll buy a good television. In the mean time, I have plenty of good books to read.

and they don't even work as well as tube tv's! somebody moves real fast on a flat panel and you see trails of where they were...

when they work as good as tube tv's (and as long) and cost about 1/3 of what they do today, then i'll start looking.

I got divorced and watching TV seriously took a dive. I now watch some OCC or Myth Busters on Discovery, lolo and yes OMG Stargate Atlantis (Japanese Satelitte TV ... is hard up) ... Not much else to watch ...

The Plasma 42' was the only thing the wife left me that was worth any real money. Maybe, she knew that if she stole that I would have drive my car into her parents living room!

The appartment building next to mine has a history of "borderline" tenants. I was recently inside an appartment which was practically empty, except for the flat screen screen which came up to my chest.

I agree. I really dislike the television being the focal point of a "living" room. Isn't the room supposed to be about. . . you know. . . living? Not being a vapid vegetable?

When I was growing up, we actually had a "living room" and there was a separate room called the "TV room", that just had the television, a couch and a recliner for my grandfather. The thought of putting the TV in the living room was as outrageous as this probably sounds today. The only time I remember the TV coming out into the living room was for the "Miracle on Ice" at the Olympics in Lake Placid (1980).

I've never viewed television as anything other than incidental to my life. It's sort of like junk food - it's fun once in a while I suppose, but you know it really isn't doing much to make you better.

My in-laws actually have a cool setup in their living room. There's a television, but most of the time it's concealed in the wall behind an oil painting. The painting is on hinges and can be swung out of the way when someone wants to watch the tube (which isn't often). It does a LOT to make the room more personable, cozy and liveable and less like a "typical" room. There's actual furniture and not a single plastic box or flashing LED thingy or electronic gizmo anywhere. It's quite nice actually. Just couches, chairs, bookcases, a fireplace, etc. Very condusive to conversation and personal interaction. I've always liked that. The "cubby" in the wall where the television is would otherwise have just been dead space due to the shape of their house and how it's laid out. Very nice solution, IMHO.

Back when I was young we had radio, dagnabbit! And we were happy to have that. To listen we'd have to pedal uphill both ways to the 'lektricity shed to bring back enough electrons to run the damnable thing.

I have an lcd and love it. Great for watching movies. I don't need it, but then again I don't need my 911 either.

I probably watch too much TV but I'm too cheap to spend that kind of $$$ on a new one. My brother-in-law called a couple of months ago to offer us a 42 inch Plasma for, I think 1
$1500.00. Some deal through his work in Chicago. I told him no, even though I know that is a great price. I could think of other things that i could spend that on instead. We have 26 tvs that work just fine. Wifey has her old 14 inch from college in our bedroom but I can't watch tv in bed.

Beds are for 2 things, sleepin' and nookiein" :P :P

GAWd1 GUYS, Thank you...For a while, I thought I was all alone in my thinking. I mean...buy a 50" HDTV, pay a hundred or so to watch it?

I'd rather listen to my stereo...or my radio.

I'm still waiting for the 25 in. (27 in. ?) Toshiba I bought in 1987 for $399.99 to die. Maybe I'll think about one of those new fangled things after that.

a co worker just gave me a huge ass sony tv. he's going to some sort of flat screen, and was about to toss the old one when i came along. everyone is just dumping them. i'm thinking this is my chance to build a classic video wall.

i know a lot of people who do high end graphics, video playback, etc. they say the flat screens give an inferior picture, in detail and color.
