I don't know how, but every stray that I've found, and kept has figured out that if we hadn't have come together, one of us probably would have died, or been put to sleep. I know that sounds stupid, but I honestly believe that. They really become loyal, and thankful after about 6 months. Sadie has been around for 6 months now, and I bet that if you look into those big brown eyes, you'll see it.

Most people with "strays" or rescue dogs know what I'm talking about, and owners of purebreeds think I'm nuts. (they might be right, but not about this!)

Anyway, good on ya, and everyone else on this board. It takes a lot of understanding, love, and patience to welcome a stray, one that was mistreated, or a rescue dog into ones life. But man is it worth it!

I also get all my pets from the animal shelter and I too believe they know you snatched them from the jaws of death.

I have two cats that picked me and visitors to my house are always amazed at how friendly and affectionate they are.

I have had my "best friend" for about 8yrs now. An ex-lady friend gave him to me when he was about 7 or 8 weeks old. His daddy is a huge, papered Rott, and his mother is an extremely large, papered German Police Shepard. He is massive, and still acts like a little puppy... to me, that is. I am 6'4" and he can put his paws on my shoulders a look me straight in the eye, then want to lick me to death. He lives in his fenced yard and protects everything here. He does an excellent job!! I went out to feed him about 3 weeks ago, and I could tell that he was acting a little bit different than he normally acts. When I was opening his gate, there was 2 smaller black dogs walk up behind me, and he alerted. The dogs slowly approached with their heads down, and tails low, almost between their legs. I just told them to stop, and they both sat down, and when I approached them, they both laid down on the sides, sort of on their backs, and were exposing their bellies. They were being very submissive.

I gave my dog his food, and locked the gate, and the 2 other dogs were still laying on their sides. I approached them, and they both acted like they were really glad to see me, being very friendly. The way they looked and the way they acted with each other, they were apparently a mama dog and her yearling-ish puppy. I have several spare, fairly large, stainless steel food/water bowls. I filled one up with food for each of them. I have NEVER seen a dog suck down food like they did. A shop-vac would have had a hard time keeping up with them. I got one of my empty cat litter pails, and made it into a water bucket for them, so they could drink. It only took a minute or so for them to suck down all the food in their bowls, and then slurp down about a gallon of water. They were very happy! After they had eaten, I looked them over, and found that they were females. It also looked like the mama dog might have been "PG" or, very wormy. Maybe that explains why my dog wasn't raising hell, with them being around the house, because they were girls??

I thought that they would probably go on their way after eating, and that they would be gone the next day like many dogs that have wandered up to my house... they weren't. I fed them, when I fed my dog the next day. After they ate, the "mama dog" walked out of sight under one of my carports, and came back with something in her mouth, and made a bee-line for my hot-tub deck and went under. It looked like it was a newborn puppy. The next day, I could hear the squeaking and squeals of puppies under the hot-tub deck, and I got a flashlight and found her with 3 little bitty puppies, 2 solid black, like her, and one that looked like a reversed pattern Dalmation, black with white spots. The mama dog looks very much like a Black Lab, but with a little shorter legs, and her "older" puppy looks just about like her, a little smaller framed, Black, but has a Chocolate tint, and a little longer hair. I don't know much about the new ones yet... I was not intending to have 6 dogs here, but there is plenty of acreage, being I live in a rural area. I guess they are the newest family members and they are very healthy, and very friendly to me and my number one dog. He also tolerates them being here also. I guess he wanted some friends.

Now when I have to buy dog food, I buy the 50 pound bag instead of the normal 25 pound bag. They have slowed down on just sucking the food down, but the mama dog still makes short work of her food bowl. I also do give her more, because of her puppies, but she still finishes long before the "older" puppy does.

O-well, this is my "rescued" dog story. I guess she will introduce me to the new puppies, when she gets damned good and ready to. No pics yet, I still have not tried to figured out how to use my "new" year old digital camera. Tony.
